    Thumbs up

Watched the video~ She did very well. Can see why she won.

Her costume looked fantastic on her, loved the personal touch of the ribbon and the gloves.
The elegance of the costume matched the music.
Excellent use of the enormous concrete dance space.
    Her moves matched the music.
Her facial expression & emotion, had to look really hard to discern. The video quality is atrocious, portions of her emotion is lost in digital translation. But that is not the dancer's faulty. Got one heck of a chuckle from those expressions and emotions I could see.

    Good job.

Sponsors of competitions have told me that sometimes it turns out there is a judge who tends to have higher standards than the rest (and therefore is more critical), or sometimes there is a judge who tends to be more lenient. So it's possible that the negative judge scored EVERYBODY lower than what her colleagues did. Hard to say, without knowing the people involved. Just wanted to let you know that "disliking everything about" you might not be the motive for how that judge scored you.

I looked at another score sheet, and she loved what the other girl did. No biggie, I figure that if everyone else liked it, then that's what I was going to hold on to.

I have no interest in dance competitions. The elements being judged are too subjective and open to personal opinion.

If I want useful feedback I find someone specific, who's opinion I trust, and ask them.

I have only attended one competition (as audience and not participant). I think it was pretty fairly judged.
The problem with that one is it's supposed to be a national championship, but many of the best dancers do not even want to compete in this dance.
*nods* There will be a Best Bellydancer in Minnesota contest here in August, but out of the dozens of pro belly dancers in town, I don't know of a single one who is entering. Last year it went to a girl from Wisconsin, probably due to lack of competition (don't get me wrong, she's a good performer and a good dancer, but some of her technique was worrisome). I have no idea who judges this contest.

The thing is.. if the judges loved this person so much, in all that she did, would this make you want to model yourself and your dancing more on her, and less on yourself? Would you figure, that if you did not win, then it must be something you've done wrong that is at fault? Maybe not you, personally, Alosha, coz you've got more about you, but some folks might. And would this be a bad or good thing? I feel it would be disastrous in the long term and feed all kinds of insecurities.

Yes I do wonder if some of us suffer from a large dose of sour grapes. It's fine to critique seriously. It's drear day well we all agree on our likes and dislikes but you should be able to give credit where it is due. I find the performance "over-emphasised" and frantic as I do with a lot of Russian performers. I much refer an "easier" laid back attitude and way with a style of dance but others like all that energy. I have a friend who really admires a local dance troupe for their colourful presentation, I find them all a bit wearying. Another friend likes a UK dancer who can be very innovative.she doesn't grab me but she sure can dance. This is why the thread "a worst dancer" was all wrong.
