New and have a personal question

Hi,

I'm new to belly dancing and I'm taking my first one on one session on Thursday. My instructor has advised me for attire she would like me to wear a unitard. I really don't have to many problems with that however, my concern is wearing a unitard is that it might show me “excited” for lack of a better term. Any suggestions?

Ask another guy about this.

to the forum. I wouldn't go to the expense of a unitard on your first lesson anyway. Just wear a decent pair of track pants. Seems rather silly of the teacher to suggest that and a rather unusual request. She is having you on, or you are having us on.

Do you actually have a unitard to wear? I'd ask if you can substitute sweatpants, harem pants, or athletic shorts (assuming you own these already).

I also recommend that you
1) buy a dance belt. For the record, you wear it with your unit pointing towards your chin, rather than your toes.
2) wear a hip scarf over your unitard to camouflage your genital area.

Yes, I do have a untard. I was planning on a unitard and shorts and that should help. Thank you for the suggestion.

To everyone else, I'm new and I posted what I feel a relevant topic for men, in the men's area. How does this sound I'll treat everyone with respect, if you treat me with me with respect. What a novel idea.

Oh please, what do you expect? Turn up on a predominantly female website devoted to a dance form that attracts its share of weirdos, and your first post is about getting overexcited in class. Not cool.

I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt - this does happen. In my college's performance of Lysistrata, one actor had that problem while on stage...you could clearly see it behind his costume/prop phallus. :shok::lol: I'm not sure what his issue was...

Personally, I think that if a guy can't handle taking a dance class without getting "excited", he isn't ready for dance class. It's not polite in a business situation...which is what dance class is.

I totally agree with giving new members here the benefit of the doubt. <yay and LOLS for double entendres>

I appreciate that the OP's concern happens :)think: maybe appreciate isn't quite the right word) and would be especially worrisome to the younger and more impressionable male wannabe dancer. But it's not the best way of saying "hi bellydancing ladies, I'm new here".

(I can't get too offended with this thread - it keeps reminding me of the fluorescent Borat mankini I saw yesterday and I LMAO about that.)

Oh, that's easy, just turn your mind off to that kind of thing, for as humans, we can control a lot of what we feel. Concentrate your mind on what you are in the dance class to do, i.e. learn dance and dance in which case you should be seeing movement around you and in front of you, not things to excite you.

And contrary to popular oppinion men do not 'just get excited', the ones that do, let it happen for they have seen sex objects not people, a failing in themselves not their situation.

One thing I found beneficial back at the start of my journey in this dance was to defocus my eyes so I saw only movement not detail, but that was done for an entirely different reason to your concern, for I am one who gets lost in detail not the big picture.

As to a unitard, I ask why, sure I can understand the nuances of correct movement can be seen more readily with such attire, but I would question a requiste for a new dancer to wear such a garment, as it not a usual form of wear in an ME dance class, not from my experience anyway, in fact I have never seen one yet.

I started with a pair of traksters and a t-shirt, now I dance in class in jeans and kurta with a shemagh as a waist belt, where correct movement can be clearly seen as it is the waist belt many focus on when dancing, as that is the core of the movement, the waist/hips and what they are doing.

So whether you be a troll or not, I answer for the benefit of all, yourself and others who look in, for males in this dance certainly do not need to be tarred with old cliches that never were as there is from some quarters enough resistance already, I hope for the genuine to dispel those myths as a male involved with ME dance.

As to earlier poster's obvious reticence to take your question seriously, I have to be fair and agree, such a question is a 'big question' for a new poster, a poster that just happens to be male, for this website does attract for want of a better description, the wrong sort from time to time. But what an entrance, not a Taurus are you, thinking bull in a china shop and all that.Welcome.

Its not neccessarily a matter of being excited. In something as tight as a unitard you can often end up with an unwanted imprint even when you're not aroused. You see this a lot with cyclists.

My question would be though why war something like that? Are the women in class also expected to wear unitards? Like other's suggested, a pair of sweats should do just fine. Basiclly anything that doesn't restrict your movements are fine. I teach most of my classes in a pair of jeans.

As for dance belts? From my experience they're damn uncomfortable and counter productive to our dance. For one thing, they squeezed my hips to much so that quivers were not visable because there was nothing to shake. What I do to minimize any bulge in my costumes is to wear a tight pair of briefs, ut not the kind that are cut to enhance your bulge like Calvins or 2xi. You want a pair that are cut straight across the front. If you cant find those then a pair of speedos should do. As long as your arrow is pointed south and they're snug it should smooth out your lines.

Tarik gave some very good advice and, despite others comments here, I thank you for having the courage to ask this question. I know how awkward it can be to ask or phrase it.

I have not personally met yet any male dancers, and not being one myself it is hard for any female to give advice. However I have seen the problem you mentioned regarding how to hid the bulge. Some do it well, others don't even seem to try.

Is there anyone else taking that class you can ask before hand if they all wear Unitards? That sounds more like something a ballet teacher would request. Still for the first class no teacher should expect anyone to have the exact outfit. Wear what is comfortable and then check out what others in the class are wearing.

Oh, that's easy, just turn your mind off to that kind of thing, for as humans, we can control a lot of what we feel.
It is not quiet so easy for men to control that, contrary to what many women and some men think. Age is a large factor for one. Younger men can have problems controlling it because of many factors (visual, vibrations of being in a car, the way their pants rub against it, etc), while other older men have gained a little more experience on how they can shut it off when it starts. However even still men are never 100% able to control when or where they end up having an erection. Second factor is how much testosterone a man has. A low level will help with them not thinking about or getting aroused so easily. However those at the higher end will have more difficulty controlling it even when they turn their minds off it.

lokk here far be it from me to stop you alll when you are having fun but the guy posted that he has never had a lesson before in his life but he is having a one on one with a female dancer who has asked him to wear a unitard. I know he says he's on the level but what are the chances that a reputable dancer has even granted him his first lesson as a "one on one" - let alone that she thought it a good idea to ask him to wear a unitard as a male totally unknown to her.

oh and his mother was a bellydancer until she took up female wrestling.

Geoff, if you are on the level I will apologise. come back and post a question about dancing and I for one will be happy to answer

Even if he's not legit, it is a legitimate question that I'm sure many other guys have. So even if he's just pulling our legs, the information will be of value to someone else.

Boy oh, boy,

I never knew my little post would cause such a commotion. I posted my question in the “male dancer's” section because I thought other men posted, and I felt it was a fair question, I was not trying to offend anyone. With that said I'm sorry if I offended anyone. Also I'll try to answer any questions and ease concerns about me being on this forum.

First off I did a privet one on one lesson for a few reasons. 1. I have never done belly dancing before! 2. I figured I could get a better idea of the moves by doing one on one rather than in a class. When I asked about a one on one my teacher suggested tight clothing so she could evaluate my moves better. She said a unitard was okay but than I had my concerns. I did not want to offend her or anyone else so that's why I posted. To be on the safe side I wore a unitard and shorts to cover up and not offend.

First off I'm gay, I'm not on this forum to pick up women. With that said since I'm gay I have a lot of the same interests as women, I exercise to videos, I love fashion, and doing my toe nails.

Yes, my mom has always been athletic and danced for a few years. When she was teaching she had a student, that was a wrestler and suggested my mom try it out.

I do a lot of exercise videos and there a few belly dancing videos around, and I figured I would try it out. Plus I always had a small interest in it.

I had my first session just about an hour a go and it was FABULIOUS!! And I did not to bad.

I would like to thank the good people that have been welcoming and give me a fair chance. I'm hear to post and talk about belly dancing. For the others that don't want me around. Well, I'm sorry you feel that way. However, its a free country and you don't have to like me. Hope I eased any concerns and answered a few questions.

Peace,

Geoff

Glad to hear your first lesson went well Geoff & you resolved any dilemma about wearing a unitard. I still think it is an odd thing for the teacher to request/suggest a unitard. But maybe that is her ideal when it comes to practice clothes.

Will you continue one to one lessons or will you be joining a class at sometime?

This is a legit question that male dancers have to deal with.

And i've seen this happen with gay male dancers who had nothing-no one in the room to get aroused by. so to blame the man for lack of control, i dont agree with.

There have been some valuable costuming tips here regarding the "unit" and im sure they will benefit other male lurkers, who in turn won't have to post the embarrassing question-and get flamed.

I do understand taking a question like that to an anonymous BD forum.

Welcome to the forum! :D

I'm glad you liked your first belly dance experience. I imagine costuming would be difficult for a man...good to hear you were able to wear what your teacher asked, but made yourself comfortable.

It's not such an odd question; I've had more than one student concerned about leotards revealing whether or not she was feeling chilled. This is sort of the guy version of that. I suggested strategically placed milk pads or bandaids for the girls who were really worried about this. I suppose guys could use duct tape if it becomes a problem. ;)

Welcome to the forum, Geoff, and may you have many happy decades of dancing.
