  • Yay! Her drum solo choreography is REALLY unique and unusual. She has such a unique style but so elegant and fluid! I hear she's supposed to be making more dvds, so I can't wait for those!!!
Honestly, I think Michelle Joyce's Drum Solo dvd has a great drill section, and she broke up the choreography into logical little "chunks" so it's easy to work with and practice with. Sadie's original drum solo dvd with IAMED was very nice, with a great practice/drill section, but I hesitate to recommend that one based on her shenanigans. Jillina's original drum solo dvd from IAMED is also a great one, and still is fresh even as old as it is. I really think her choreography on that one is adorable, but very pop and upbeat "Jillina" :) I just bought Nanna Candelaria's dvd that Michelle Joyce produced and I think I would recommend this one as a companion to Michelle's or Jillina's because Nanna's interpretation of the music is so different. It's very lovely. That should get you started! :)
Hi Nym! I don't actually have Ava's newest drum solo video (the one from IAMED, right) and I haven't seen it, but I have her Sizzlin Hips and Sizzlin Torso and I think she's a master of many different techniques and she is able to break them all down very well. As far as drum solo dvds, most of them are choreographies, and if you take apart and analyze the choreographies you can learn the basic "rules" -- ie, Don't start off at 100 miles an hour. Build the energy as the song progresses. Don't try to hit every accent. Don't shimmy through the entire piece. Keep traveling to a minimum, relatively speaking -- especially if you have a live drummer. Downs and ins on the Doum and outs and ups on the Tek, but that's a very general guideline and half the Egyptian dancers break it at some point. :)
I'm not sure. May be some time next year, but exactly when, I can't say. NAlini's in New York and I'll be seeing her tomorrow!
