Sadie and Kaya in an "erotic" music video....

Erotic is not my word choice, its in the description of the video.

THere isn't much I like about the video so I don't have much to say about it. Although I thought he body painting of snake skin on kaya and sadie was a neat concept if it had of been used in a more artistic performance setting. But that is just my opinion.

I'm sharing this because there is so much talk of fusion on this forum and whether or not it is good or bad for belly dance, is it belly dance etc etc

Videos like the above to me show that it doesn't have to be fusion to stray far from the original source and isn't this more detrimental to Middle Eastern dance than labelling a dance fusion which blends styles. Sadie is a exceptionally talented woman and ridiculously well known in the belly dance community. I was suprised to see her in such a video to be honest.

As a university student I def need money but I have turned down music video opportunities because I want to be known as a dancer, not a lingerie clad girl crawling all over some singer along with other women. I hope Sadie didn't do this because she needed money...

On the flip side maybe she genuinely enjoys it and is comfortable with her sexuality and this is her thing, which I can't hold against her. To each their own.

For some reason seeing Kaya in such a video and carrying on as such didn't surprise me at all, most likely because of the facial expressions she makes while performing "belly dance" normally.

I couldn't finish it either, Maria, I was so disappointed to see Sadie in it. :(

Plus, I can't stand rap music. >.< But that's just me.

No I couldn't watch it through.
uncomfortable,bad,tacky..and if I were the organiser of dedicated belly dance festivals of workshops and shows, I would not consider employing them ever again. That is exactly the kind of thing that debases this dance.

Ah Rap music..shame the way it has gone. We had, in my High school a few years back, one of the original Rap poets from the Caribbean (now an illustrious Scouser) and there was nothing nasty about his work...raw yes but witty, clever, funny and full of respect for women!!!!!

OMG! just awful! I am sure they will lose a lot of respect over that. I also didn't watch to the end. If they want to dance hiphop to rap or do burlesque go ahead, but they should know better not to dress up in anyway that can be construed as BDers nor use bellydance in such a manner.

Same here. :(

Cheesy old ME stereotypes effortlessly fused with the usual rappers surrounded by semi-naked girls... (isn't that a cheesy old stereotype yet?)

I think you're insulting the definaition of "cheesy".

But to be serious there is something harmless about cheese..this is nasty just plain nasty. Who watches these videos..kids..young people..girls believe they have to be men's sex slaves when they watch disgusting crapola like this...we are here to pander to semi-crims (or real one) ooooo I wanna be a moll if I can't be a WAG
Sadia and Kaya want putting straight. I hope no one in this country ever employs them as a reputable demonstration of this art form.
Harsh yes...that's me .....off wiv their heads...:(

Point taken. You are quite right. Cheese is not the word.

<re-examines motives...>

I have brushed it off for the same tired old images of girls writhing in bedlah against a background of sand dunes/bedouin tents etc etc. and I know why - it's because the (tired old) image of gyrating women round their - (what is it? object of desire, lord-and-master, pack alpha male, pimp? I don't really have a finger on the pulse of the relationships here) - makes me want to vomit, and tying it into anything belly dance related even more so.

I have a young daughter and the idea of her ever buying in to this sort of cr&p, and the airbrushed Playboy'ised image that is pushed at young women today, is horrible. And having to grow up in a world where other people buy into it and use this type of dumb-ass attitude to bolster their own pathetic inadequacy, sheesh... shut up and make us a cup of tea love and HAVEN'T we come a long way since the seventies and what's feminism grandma?

So yeah, big fat vomiting smilies to K&S for this one, and are we $urpri$ed?

speechless...just...speechless
:mad::mad::protest::protest::shok:

I have found this one of the most offensive BD related things I have ever seen- more than any ill conceived fusion or relatively low profile dodgy dancing.

this is catering far more to the mainstream and what is so joyful about the dance- music, history, culture, respected and fabulous dancers that don't have the perfect hollywood body is completely removed.

And the rap!! why?? why afilliate BD with something that has such mysogynistic attitudes??!!!

it is wrong on so many levels. Shame on you Sadie and Kaya.

stupid bellydance tricks

You did a good job of staying neutral & 'to each her own' etc.!
I, however, logged in just so I could rate it ;) first time I've ever given one star on a video. I don't mind saying that's a really poor job choice on those dancer's parts.
I may use it as an example of what NOT to do with bellydance...

"I've got a snake for you" geez! "zero point" is right

Consider the source. At least they're not doing it at Rakkasah - remember the coffee table?

The phrase "soft porn" comes to mind.

That was the word that came to my mind. I finished the video, at night, when my kids were in bed, with my husband watching... it gets worse.

On the other hand I kept waiting for some actual BD... and never saw it. The thoughts that kept coming to my mind was "Harem Fantasy", those old stories of women being stolen and sold in north africa as Harem slaves. The dominant male waiting to be pleasured by his "possessions". And this .... whatever you call him, was reveling in the image! (I did my best not to listen to the lyrics, it was just too much with everything else.)

I have to say this is a new low and considering some of the older videos I have seen that is really saying something.

Fine to be okay with your sexuality - whatever- but continuing an orientalist "harem fantasy" discourse in 2009 that's sure showing respect to the cultural dance form:rolleyes:
It's depressing HOWEVER far from unusual. I've noticed quite a few hip hop videos are becoming very good at spreading Orientalist ideas:
my favorite:

Note the bellydancers in an Indian themed video(harem fantasy is also the inspiration here) and song as if there's no difference between the cultures and art forms: both are just the exotic east:naghty:. Supposedly there are well known bellydancers in this video (unconfirmed) Adoree from BDSS i remember being mentioned but I don't know them well enough to tell for myself.

another one that can't decide between a vague Indian dance style - bellydance or hip hop but what does it matter? it's all the "East"

The one you posted was a natural development from what had come before - sickening but I doubt it will be the only one:(.

Was it the Kama Sutra episode?

Say what? Kama Sutra? *eyebrows raised* I'm would not have believed it was possible to combine those moves - bellydance and music together:lol::rolleyes::naghty:

Maybe someone should put Sadie and Kaya in touch with that couple on the South American tv show: the ones the used the women's bum as a sword holder. I think both are heading in the same artistic direction;)

It's so sad that far from women being liberated, we appear to have gone backwards. The sex-slaves/b*tches of gangtas, the WAG-wannabees,the Jordan-wanabees..sexual freedom..my rear end!!! It exploitaion.
And little girls grow up to dress like paedo-delights and thinking they have to stroke some man's ego...or whatever :rolleyes:instead of what we aimed for the freedom to chose...jobs,life-style,equal status in the home etc etc..political aims Wot no chance while bimbos like these make videos that think all little girls have think about is being desirable to some man who will pimp/protect or keep them in 2K handbags.

I know young dancers who idolise Sadie through her instructional videos ...well she don't impress me..pandering to the sleazier side of music instead of representing this dance in a classy and elegant way .
