10 Yard Skirt Tutorial

Good instructions and it is so cool to see you :)

If one is really tall, like me f ex, should I make a four tiered skirt or should I make the tiers (sp?) longer, or just make an extra shorter tier at the top. How long is that skirt you made?
I know you said to divide any measurements by three to make a three tiered skirt but I was thinking proportion wise. If each strip is too wide then it might look not as nice.

If you do four for a ten yard skirt, the top tier ends up not being long enough around to gather at the waist. The tier math is: 10 (ish) for the bottom, 5 (ish) for the middle, and 2.5 (ish) for the top. If you add one more, the top tier is 1.25 yards, or about 45 inches. With my hips at 41, the top tier is a BAD idea! :)

What you can do, is alternate the tier lengths to add visual interest. As long as the three tiers add up to the total length, they don't have to be the same size. Or you can add a ribbon at the bottom.

The skirt I just made is about 35 inches long.

I'm glad you ladies like it!

I have seen some that leave the usual 35/36" length with three tiers and then just add a ruffle at the bottom that adds the extra length as needed. It looks really nice too.

hmmm... 20 yrds of a 7" ruffle. Added together that makes... 37.5 yrds with all the layers. I wonder if that's how the people making 30+ yrds skirts figure it?

I was thinking that I could also make a tight band at the top to not have as much bulk around my hips? I have a normal skirt from h&m that is very tight at the top and the the tiers start at the top of my thighs. It looks nicer for my shape i think. Or maybe it could be a bit elastic instead?

I have seen that done as well and it looks very nice. You have to shape the top to fit your hips, which means a curve or darts, and the length shouldn't be more then 10" ,less if you wear it low, but it does look very nice and properly made it is less likely to slip.
