I always find the emoticons on OD a bit limited. Is it me or do more people find this one :) looking a bit awkward?

In Holland we have the 'belly dance fundamentalists', which refers to students of Soraya Hilal who think they do the pure form of raqs sharqi. Not many people outside of Europe know about this stream of dancers I guess.

Over here we call them "Hilal-ers" and we joke that their prayer book is Wendy's "Serpent of the Nile." But you're right -- I don't think she had much impact on dance in the US.

This guy is something I use when I don't want a strong emoticon.

I like the one giving group hugs too. But there are some here that Bhuz doesn't have that I like a lot too, mostly the dancing banana! :yay:

6-week wonders - The expression "6-week wonder" (6ww) is generally applied to unstudied/unskilled dancers who are promoting themselves professionally as teachers and/or performers. Literally it refers to beginners that have taken classes for 6 weeks and then start teaching and performing professionally (often undercutting prices making it harder for real professionals to get good gigs). The 6ww doesn't recognize that her/his training is just the tip of the iceberg and doesn't know, or often doesn't care, that there is an entire MOUNTAIN of work to do just under the water. 6wws will never accept that their students have outgrew them and they keep information about other teachers in their area and about workshops secret, to hide their own incompetence. For more information about 6ww, read this thread: http://www.bellydanceforums.net/instructors-students/13969-clarification-term-six-week-wonders.html.

mast ur bat * ry performing - A subversion of diva behaviour when the dancer just sits on her/his own thumb and spins aimlessly around her/his own ego. The performance is all about that dancer, her/his ego or whatever and there is an underwhelming level of respect for the dance, the culture, the process, the audience etc. (Taken from this thread: http://www.bellydanceforums.net/other-dance-stuff/13920-dancers-you-dont-like.html)

We have to add: this one was coined by Salome, these things tend to get forgotten in the future. We have to think about copy rights

Dripples - tiny and droopy nassles looking like drippy nipples (source, example). See nassles.

Cupcake factory explosion costume - This is what you get when the costume appears as a cross between a belly dance costume and an explosion at a designer cupcake factory, but is not related to the muffin top phenomena. (source)

belly dance burka: the face veil(sorry, not a fan here)

the hit and twirl: preferably with a cane, but can happen without one. One spins one way, the other the other way, and you smash into eachother. Finish it off by looking as neutral as possibble and keep spinning:)

the bellydance ghost: the reason why always something will go wrong. He is the one that will shut up the cdplayer during class, breaks the heating, makes you forget that one piece of costume at the shows, makes you trip, etc...

Dripples: the way nassels are so tiny and droopy, they are more like drippy nipples (coined by Shanazel)
Drooples: "Dripples are always better than 'Drooples'!" (coined by Shakti) "if something dripples long enough it eventually drooples" (quote from Shanazel)

Shimmy bore: the dancer who does five minutes of shimmy variations (thanks
to Serena Wilson who came up with this one many years ago)

Popaholic: the dancer who devotes herself to muscular gymnastics

Bliss ninny: dancer who uses belly dance to groove with the universe without regard to musicality, appropriate movement, or costuming (I stole this one from The Rainbow Family).

LOL I LOVE this one!

I just watched a "shimmy bore" on youtube today. I dont want to say her name, because she's not a pro and I dont want to be mean. But "miss shimmy bore 2012"...at first was very impressive. She can do an absolutely amazing freeze shimmy...and a freeze shimmy is one move I would love to master but can't even do...so I was deeply impressed...then she began to layer absolutely every other move she knew with a freeze shimmy...every other move she knew...until all I could think was "enough with that one shimmy already!"

Resurrected and stickied! Hooray for Amulya and Daimona once again and to all who contribute.

Anala, I believe "coochie loop" is your term and therefore 'tis you who should define it for posterity as well as for the rest of us.

"Coochie loop" when swag-looped fringe (such as on the "great loops" style bedlah) perfectly frames one's (ahem) girl parts, especially when constructed so as to leave a visible aperture.

(repeats to herself, "Happy thoughts! Happy thoughts! But, the sequins were so pretty! Happy thoughts!")

ETA: And, a series of loops around the belt are not a bad thing; however, when there is only one or a few, and that one is placed "just so" . . . not good!

Modesty flower- where the costume is pretty much see through but the crotch is hidden by a small flower decoration. I believed it was coined by Shanazel.
