Please everyone cool off, lets not continue with any put downs even if it is just mild. The recalcitrant one has been reprimanded with an infraction, lets leave it at that, I'm sure she is feeling bad enough already.

Deep breathe and continue with calm:)

I do want to say that I stand with my bellydance family, and publicly denounce anyone who calls himself/herself a bellydancer, yet does the things that Sadie and Kaya have done. I feel I must stand against it, because as a dancer, I have a responsibility to do so. How I conduct myself, both on and off the stage, has a major impact on everyone around me: my fellow dance brothers and sisters, teachers of our art, promoters, potential employees, musicians, and my audiences (most notably, the young impressionable minds in those audiences). I am a representative, an ambassador, and the opinions of the GP are influenced by my actions.

Of course, being human, I'm going to make mistakes, but I would never do anything to cause detriment to the dance I love so much, nor give people the wrong impression about what I do. Never underestimate the influence of our lives on others.

There are truly people who believe bad publicity is better than no publicity at all. Hit 'em, revile 'em, stone 'em, critisize 'em- just do not ignore them.

Kaya and Sadie have chosen their path in dance life and they must find something satisfying in it, be it money, acclaim, or infamy. I hope so, because they have probably passed the point of being able to return to mainstream belly dance and of ever being taken seriously.

I am probably in a minority of one here but as someone who has never seen that show before I am much more horrified at the betrayal of someone's private life with all the hidden cameras and mics than I am at stuff that a couple of girls did and said in what they assumed was a private space, presumably after a few drinks.

It seems to me that there is probably a great demand for dancers like Sadie and only time and history will tell whether she is remembered as a cutting edge, boundary transgressing performer in the mould of say Josephine Baker or whether she is remembered as a slutty belly dancer or not remembered at all.

My concerns regarding her performances are really to do with the pushing of the envelope of the genre of belly dance into something that is effectively far removed from the sacred dance it is, and into a kind of soft porn performance in which women are exploited as passive sex objects.

My concerns are very similar to the concerns I have regarding beauty pageants, as both beauty pageants and an overtly sexualised form of belly dance are sadly used by pimps and traffickers as ways of ensnaring innocent women and girls into sex work.

As for Sadie, I imagine that she is probably a sweet person who herself is easily lead and her words and actions in the back of that cab prove this IMO.

I would love to meet her in person and discuss this with her as I suspect that she would be deeply concerned if she understood the consequences of what it is that she is doing.

Just a brief FYI -- that show has been going on for several years, and when you go to Vegas it's a bit of a joke that you will LOOK for one of the mic'd cabs. They drive slower than the others and the driver wears an earpiece speaker/mic thing. If they use your "confession" on the air, you get paid $500. And you get the taxi ride for free :)

At the end of the ride, ALL of the passengers are told they have been filmed, and they are required to sign a waiver saying their material can be aired. Anybody filmed is perfectly within his or her rights to say "No, I won't sign the waiver," and the video is erased. Sadie had every opportunity to say "no, this might hurt my career down the road" (and the actual cabbies who work for TC will tell that a LOT of famous and semi-famous people won't sign the waiver for just that reason.)

I believe the Youtube generation has forgotten the difference between notoriety and fame. Bad behavior gets you just as much attention as good behavior, and people like Sadie don't care how they get their attention.

I disagree that she is easily led. Actually I tend to think she is the "ringleader" when it comes to the antics of the duo, but I have nothing to prove that save a gut feeling. And she has absolutely NO regard for the consequences of her actions -- that much was obvious in what the two of them were saying after the Rakkasah debacle. They want to do what they want to do when they want to do it and damn anyone who says otherwise. That kind of selfishness also implies a complete disregard for the dance community itself.

But you're right -- time will be their judge.

I find myself not agreeing at all with Delilah's blog post. Anyone else read it?

I'm not agreeing either, and especially   about anyone presuming we are all attracted to belly dance by "some sort of ancient symbolic feminine serpent wisdom". Er, no, actually. Or am I somehow too uptight and uninformed on "women's studies" to know my real motivation (unlike Kaya and Sadie?)?

“On the underbelly of judgement is longing” (words spoken at a labyrinth school)
Is it just me, or is that the jellus h8er argument in fancy words? And "before you criticise, what have YOU done for belly dance then?"* is "if you are so great where's your YouTube clip?"

The only valid point I'm seeing is the implication that the casual observer reading forum boards might think we are all a bunch of cats, and THAT is bad for the image of belly dancers. Hmm. Compared to skanky clips of actual dancing labelled as belly dance on YouTube? If the casual member of the public is really getting his/her image of bellydance from browsing special interest forums rather than watching any dancing they are, er, unusual.

Aha... .... maybe it isn't about what the GP think here, it's about the "dance sisterhood" who should all be supportive no matter what.

*(OK, as a hobbyist not much in the grand scheme of things. But I've not writhed around on the floor with my ass in the air or simulated sex in the name of belly dance)

Yeh same 'ol same 'ol....
"Don't ya wish ya ass was sexy like mine?" (jellus haters synonymous)
or "I shown you mine, now show me yours(youtube that is!)" and if you do "You're a jellus hater..you're just a hafla bopper/fat old woman/ and wish you was sexeee like me"

And I did ask on Bhuz WhTF Delilah was (and is that her real name:rolleyes:)to find out she was yer goddessy smoddesy. rabitting on about artistic freedom..yeh play fast and lose with the dance of another culture.
You know all this could be avoided if they hadn't called themselves bellydancers when they were indulging in wriggling around in that video. I mean we don't want to deprive all the little w***kers of their fun.

Shuffles off to take her pills.....
