Video says it best -- if the instructor has video on line, check it out. If you want to dance like that, take her class. (But not all of us have video online -- I'm working on it but I have very very little on tape. Just because she doesn't have a web video presence doesn't mean she's not a great teacher. Morocco only just last year posted a vid of herself and she's been teaching since the earth cooled.
Aziyade, that is priceless. That being said, I have a lot of respect for Morocco and her contribution to bellydance.
I'm a perfect example of someone who tried to go it alone for 7 years with instructional videos and DVD's. I knew from the very beginning that it was a poor substitute for live instruction, but at the time, there were no classes available in my hometown, and I had no opportunity at the time to go to another city to take classes. Although I learned some of the basic moves and a few combos, I was missing all the little nuances of the dance. Not to mention that it's so annoying to hear the DVD instructor chirp, "Good job, ladies!"when I knew good and well that she couldn't see me to know what I was doing!:wall:
If a person is just looking for another fitness program, DVD's alone may be fine as long as care is taken to do the moves correctly (but there again, how does one know without an instructor?), but if it's your heart's desire to sincerely learn bellydance, nothing can substitute live instruction.
Hang in there, stepbystep, when there's a will, there's a way. Start saving now for a "bellydance class fund," then when you are able to locate a qualified teacher that you want to take lessons with, go for it! But mind you, bellydance is veeeeeeeeeeery addictive...
