I agree with y'all here. And I also think using every learning tool out there (DVDs, watching GOOD YouTube videos) and doing correct research on the dance is essential to creating the good, well-rounded dancer.
And I do believe in the self taught dancer too! I particularly taught myself how to improvise and feel the music since we didn't cover much of this in class by watching videos of the greats, listening and understanding to Arabic music...I taught myself how to dance and balance with a sword. But I wouldn't be where I am today without LIVE instruction and live critique. Even if it's sporadically, it can still do wonders no matter how amazing you are.
