I am interested in any stories where belly dancing has impacted or interfaced with historical events.
In the 1960's there was an ethnic clash between Greeks and Turks on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. British paratroopers were sent in to keep the peace, and a belly dancer went in to alleviate them from the monotony of their peacekeeping. Her name was Pepita Ramirez and that is literally all I know about her. There are two photos of her on the Web; one on gettyimages.com and the other on corbisimages.com.
There is an artist by that name on Facebook but I doubt that is her. I realize this is a longshot after all these years (I was an embryo when those photos were taken), but any information or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
