Thought Provoking Belly Dance Costumes: the good, the bad and the hideous

Torch singers? What are those?

Torch singers specialize in songs of unrequited love. Often depicted in slinky evening gowns, grasping a microphone in both hands, crooning into it passionately.
Unrequited, lost, one sided, or unable to move on from a relationship that is ended. The sentimental crooning part is important too. It's found a lot in Jazz and Blues but every genre of music has some. The name is based on the phrase, "to carry a torch for someone".

Truth is I love them if they're not to sickly sweet, but then Jazz and Blues has a special place in my heart.

I DOTE on parasols in belly dance, especially if one sets the end of the shaft alight and swings it around like a flaming poi ball.

???????

and a new very unfortunate costume:

And to compensate for the unfortunate costumes, here is one I like. I love coin costumes!

Pop-out city! Hahaha, I was thinking it would be a good costume for that alien lady in Total Recall, if a 3rd cup is added in the middle, there is definitely space for one

With the coin costume, I wonder where she got the belt and bra from, they are real coins, but not like kuchi coins with loops. I got the same necklace she has!

About 30 years ago, one of my students built a bedlah using American pennies for decoration. She painstakingly drilled each coin. Gorgeous result but the bra and hip band together must've weighed twenty pounds. She sold it for a small fortune to someone who didn't mind the weight.

I still have the big silver Saroyan coins from my first costume. Couldn't bring myself to part with them when I sold my collection. I'll use them on an ethnic dress of some kind some day, just you wait and see.:lol:

Those Saroyan coins, are they from those bra and belt sets that have little mirrors as well and tiny bells as well I think. Always wanted one, but never happened.

I do have a heavy coin costume that’s real coins, I bought a purple-ish top and skirt for it, but it’s never been used in that reincarnation because that’s when I had to stop dancing. I really like its new incarnation (middle picture). It’s also been like in the first picture, that was its original incarnation

No, I bought the Saroyan coins from another dancer in 1978. I don't think they'd even been sew on a costume until I made my silver bra and hip band. I had little money to spend and no expertise on sewing costumes so I used a couple of layers of denim for the the base of the hip band. Denim on one side, silver mesh on the other. Can't get much more Wyoming belly dancer than that. :D

The coins I have are plain silver, about the size of an American quarter, with a human figure in the center. Very definitely costume coins but heavier than most costume coins that I've used. They have a nice sound, too.

Why would someone want to buy a regular bra with some beads on it? Being sold as costume...

Kinda "meh" at best, but if the price is right, it could be the basis for something really nice - it looks like a "good start" to me...
