Ow, Jane, that sucks. Hope things work out for you. Belly dance goes in cycles of popularity among the general public and right now it seems to be at low ebb here. Zumba is up. Clogging is holding steady but adult ballet is dead in the water and flamenco fizzled after one short session.

We have just two or three teachers in a town of less than 50,000 people. Two of those teachers alternate teaching the classes at the college and the one who teaches privately had to up her hours at the day job to stay solvent. That leaves me and I am very part time. My student numbers are holding steady, but compared to seven years ago numbers are waaaay down. I don't think it is anything any of us have done wrong; it's just at a low point in the cycle.

Clogging was brought to this country by Irish/Scots Irish who originally settled in the Appalachain Mountains where it remained popular and became Americanized during the centuries the southern Appalachains were isolated. It has become a very American dance and I'm not surprised Holland doesn't embrace it. And don't mention RiverDance- not the same thing at all.

    Ooops. Off topic. Sorry, Jane.

It's all good My husband tells me of seeing Irish cloggers up in northern Maine as a kid.

So I have a plan for my class issues now that hopefully makes everyone happy. In February I'm going to re-name my current beginning class on Wednesday, "continuing learners" class. By then my beginning ladies in that class will have a foundation and can become "continuing learners" without changing their date/time. Any of my other continuing learners are welcome to come to that class.

Tuesday will get advertised as the new beginners class, that way I can start fresh with more people.
