Cryptograms have been around for thousands of years. The Spartans used a special stick called a scytale to encipher messages. To encrypt a message the encipherer would wrap the belt around the scytale and write a message on it. The belt was then unwound from the stick and sent to someone else. The decipherer would wrap the belt around a similarly-sized scytale to decode the message.

The Rosetta Stone is a classic cryptogram. It was found in Egypt in 1799 and had a message encrypted on its surface in Greek, Egyptian, and Hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphics was deciphered by figuring which sgabols were represented by the Greek and Egyptian letters...
