When being sick....

How do you guys manage?

I'm currently having the cold from hell, a short while I was worried it would turn to the pneumonia from hell. I'm not allowed to dance, ride, doing yoga or anything else physically straining. I'm not even allowed to clean the house since that might be to much work doc said.... So what do you guys do when being "grounded" from all fun activities?

I've been cutting out fabrics and drawing patterns all day long but you can only draw as man patterns you need.

And most important, how do you get going again from being sick? I really suck on the part of taking care of myself and doing things slowly. A friend of mine and I had the discussion the other day she had taken up running as an exercise but after a few days she got aches and pains in her tissue between muscle and bone in her leg. And we both said, if our horses are lame and then get well we always take it nice and easy, but when coming to ourselfs we start running, jumping and dping everything just the same as before we got hurt or ill...

So any good ideas to keep myself from overdoing it when being fever-free and my throat isn't sore anymore?

Very good question :) I am actually wondering the same: how does one get back into it without overdoing oneself and being back to square one.

As for when you're not allowed to do anything, I just don't do anything. I have been semi bedridden for half a year (broken back and surgery) and I have been reading a lot and been watching documentaries on my iPad :) and still do that as I am not magically back to normal yet.
If your doctor says not to do anything, I would be very careful and not even cut patterns! Just read loads of books :D that way you'll be better much quicker!

And: get well soon!

and suddenly my cold felt very small in comparison, here I sit and feeling sorry for myself and you're recovering from a back-surgery!
I wish you get well soon! I'd probably would have gone bananas a long time ago if I had to stay in bed for that long!

After the surgery you surely get some kind of a plan for rehab? I got that for my knee when I had surgery. That in week 1 I was allowed to do this and that to gain some mobility and keep the swelling down. And it keept on for 3 months and then I got larger goals/do's. Like walk in stairs, take powerwalks, swim. I'm still not allowed to engage in any martial arts (but I do.... shame on me :naghty:)
I'd talk to a physio-therapist that is specialised in backs. My physio is specialised in damages to the knees, footjoints and lower extremities. She set up a work out scheme for me to do both in the gym and at home.

But I don't think my physio would be to thrilled when coming back after a cold and wanting a training program

It's easier to start when you have someone that tells you do this and this but avoid that....

Any other ideas?

No you are very entitled to complain about your cold: colds suck! They are awful. I always feel very sorry for myself when I have one!

I can already do quite a lot now. It's 5 weeks after the surgery I think and I can walk, walk stairs, do light household things but lifting isn't great yet as it feels like something pops in my navel if I do that (there are loads of stitches underneath my navel in the inside somewhere) hahaha! It's more my back that plays up when I dance :( my belly is fine now when dancing (I had my appendix out) so that's good :)

Did the doctor tell you how long it will take for you to get better? I have some sort of rule for myself that I don't often keep too..... But it is: when I feel slightly better I still have to rest for a few days. If I don't do that I really wreck myself. But if I do it it really helps because it gives the body some extra time.
How are you feeling at the moment?

How are you feeling at the moment?

I'm having a headache as soon as I move, wich came from all the extensive coughing I did sunday-tuesday. Hardly got any sleep those two nights. Woke with taste of blood in my mouth and my ribcage felt like a horse had kicked me with both hind feet just below my boobs.
Ribcage is ok, just a bit tender but it's waaaaay much better. The coughing was tamed with some coughing syryp with mophine in it (hell yeah! good stuff ) Now I'm only coughing when walking the stairs or when I go to bed for some rest or sleep.

My throat is sore when I swallow and my voice is really coarse and I have to whisper to even be able to say something. I'm still swollen around my neck due to the cold as well.

But I'm starting to get really restless in my body. Had to force myself not to put in my yoga-DVD in the machine and start doing some yoga... I folded the laundry out of boredom.

Doc told me to take it easy and not overdoing anything in at least a week... I've already been sick for a week.

I'm not sure about having a fever or not. Batteries are running low on our thermometer so I'm not sure it tells me the truth....

There are so many things to do when having a hard cold (I've finally recovered from a hard cold lasting for 2 months) and you can't move (even if it sucks not being allowed to do physical tasks):

  • Surf the net, read books and learn something new by reading of course. Have you read all the pages at shira.net? Or all the threads on this forum?
  • Learn to read and write arabic (there are free online courses).
  • Study the rune alphabet or do embroideries or other small crafts.
  • Watch movies and documentaries.
  • Listen to music and study the nuances between ME oriental and american oriental recordings, or compile your favourite reenactment links to your blog..

Dress well, drink water and rest.

I'm already working on shira.net. And plowing through this forum ;) LEarn to read and write arabic, hmmm I'va actually had that thought several years ago... might be intresting to know what people actually say behind my back ;)

movies and documentaries are my best friends when doing small crafts sitting in my sofa (sofa is more of a pincushion than a sofa actually, you have to watch where you sit ;) )

Listening to music is still a bit over my head, having trouble with my hearing as well now due to the cold.... everything sounds like I'm in a bathtub with water in it and my ears below the waterline

Great tips! Thank you! :D

When I'm super-sick or have a migraine, I drink lots of water and sleep, sleep, sleep. It's the only thing that seems to help me. Plus, taking any needed meds prescribed by my doctor. If the illness isn't debilitating to the point that I need so much sleep, I still stay in bed, watch TV/movies, surf the net on my iPhone, play with my iPhone apps and browse eBay (which tends to make my bank account very ill! ), or if I feel like sitting on the couch, I practise for the Zombie Apocalypse by playing the Resident Evil franchise on our game system! xD

Or I just have a Walking Dead marathon...

I can't see what's on that web site, must be something not compatible with my iPad. But yes I play a lot of games too: I got Scramble with Friends, Gems with Friends, Matching with Friends, Drawsomething (a favourite), chess and SongPop (another favourite)
They keep the brain busy and thinking. And there is always this forum. I couldn't sleep last night so I spent a lot of time reading stuff here :) I have so much to catch up on, I was absent for half a year!

You can always gently stretch in bed if you just have a cold. That will help you feel less stiff later.:)
