I'll be doing 3 hours of lectures about Egyptian dance history and how it fits into Egyptian culture the afternoon of December 30 in Orange County, California.

I'm doing shortened (1-hour each) versions of the following three:

  1. Before Tahia. The history of Egyptian dance from approximately 1830 through the 1930, before the era of Tahia Carioca. It covers famous dancers of the 19th century, talks about the invention of raqs al-shamadan, explores the rise of the Egyptian nightclub industry, dispels myths about Badia Masabni's early career, and much more.
  2. Dance in Egyptian Cinema. The story behind those movie scenes that we've all seen clips of and the dancers who starred in them. Full description at this link: Shira's Belly Dance Workshop Course Description: Dance in Egyptian Cinema
  3. Oriental Dance: Egypt's Shameful Profession. About how belly dance fits into Egyptian society. Full description at this link: Shira's Belly Dance Workshop Course Description: Oriental Dance, Egypt's Shameful Profession

The location is a private home, so you have to register and pay in advance in order to get the address where we're doing it. Also, since it's a private home, space is limited and there's a chance it will sell out, so register as soon as possible. Price is $25 for the full 3 hours, or $10 per lecture if you don't want to attend all three.

Full details on date/time, pricing, and how to register are here: https://www.facebook.com/events/340185832754964/?ref=ts&fref=ts
