Summer Moon: A Night of Arabic Music & Oriental Dance – NYC, Sunday, August 4, 2013

Featuring a five-piece Arabic band, local and international dancers, and Nany's NYC debut!

Nany, born in Alexandria, Egypt, is an elegantly musical, warm, and fun performer who began her Oriental dance career in Cairo starting in her mid-teens. During the 1990s, she was one of the most famous dancers in Cairo, performing in the city's prominent five-star hotels and in two films. This performance marks her much-anticipated US debut.

The band will include Nabawy (accordion), Mohamed Abdullah (violin), Said Emam (tabla), Hany Khafagy (dof) – and introducing Ahmed Jumruk of Syria (keyboard and vocals).

Other performers will include Lena Helt of Sweden, Ranya Renée, and more!

Lena Helt is one of the best-known popular dancers/choreographers in all of Scandinavia. With her down-to-earth, charming, and flirtatious manner, her unofficial nickname is "the Shaabiya of Sweden." Two decades ago, Lena traveled to Egypt and started studying raqs sharqi with legends such as Suheir Zaki. Yousry Sharif and Lubna Eman are other teachers that have influenced her greatly.

Ranya Renée, the producer of this evening's program, began her performing career more than 30 years ago as a theater actress and comedienne. One of New York City’s leading Egyptian-style dancer-instructors, Ranya is known for her expressions of Arabic musicality and culture, her sense of drama, and her ability to capture her audiences. She produces regular live music and dance events in New York, and tours internationally, having performed and taught on five continents.
