New prop

And now she posted a total non-apology on fb, where everyone who doesn't like the props are judgemental.

Yay! I'm judgemental, who knew?

Although now I think about it, I'd put myself down as pointing and laughing rather than judging, which is not quite the same thing.

Well, here's my judgmental two cents worth which is based on thirty-five years+ of belly dance experience and education: diamante handcuffs (and indeed just the plain old steel ones my father carried in his belt every day of his working life) have no place as a prop in middle eastern dance. At best it is non-traditional. At worst it is tacky-tacky (the most dreaded term in the Southern Girl's repertoire of assessment for those of you who are unfamiliar with the American South). :naghty:

I'm okay with being judgmental. Having good judgement is better than having none at all.

I thought that the non-apology was extremely unprofessional, it's done as much to put me off shopping with her as the handcuffs themselves.

I too found it unprofessional that she mixes her sexuality with her business. I have no problem with people who are MSW in their personal lives but I do when the lifestyle then impacts on areas which are unrelated - such as belly dance.

And despite the fact that many Egyptian dancers need/have needed to support themselves with prostitution that is not the case in the West where the dance is either a hobby or additional income (those that can make a living with it obviously do not need to supplement their income)

Makes me think the problem is her orientation - she lives MSW and thinks that's the way life is.

I wasn't going to say anything about that, but it's the last in a long list of unprofessional behaviour that's made me not want anything to do with her business. I guess this is the impetus I need to put together a line of dance-related clothing that I can wear to teach & sell, small-scalle, as well. :)

MSW? I thought that was master of social work but I doubt that's the story here. I can make a good guess at M and S- but W?

I tried googleing msw but came up with nothing that made sense in this situation so I am at a loss as well. Could someone explain?

I think it means Masochist Submissive Woman (not all subs are masochists and nor are they all women) - but I don't have time to research it at present.

Can someone tell me where the non.apology is please? If I see any more anti.vaccination blah I am going to hurl. Which would adversely affect my day which coincidentally is going to be spent making my own yoga/dance pants pattern, and maybe a tie top to go with.

Won't be crafting my own cuffs though, ;)

ETA: oh there we go, clicked through from the shop instead of searching fb and there's the drama. Yummy yummy internet drama and a fresh cup of coffee, fab. :)
ETA 2: oh good grief, now I want to hurl all over again (and it's not the coffee). Some belly dancers have been prostitutes too especially in Egypt (nice playing of the authenticity card there), so it's all cool? I get that sometimes one might be doing a fusion number that requires specialist props - my teacher has done a cane number with a different kind of cane altogether, very tongue in cheek and hilarious. So put on your big girl panties and source those from a genuine stockist of said item, or be cheap and get a novelty version off eBay or from a party shop. 'Cos it's not belly dance, even if you put "belly-" in front of it.

Goodness, my morbid curiosity has been raised to the point where I am almost tempted to sign up for Facebook just to read the drama. Perhaps someone can summarize it for me? Is the person in question championing prostitution as a legitimate sideline for belly dancers or what? Inquiring minds want to know.

W-what's a masochist?

*comes back in* I just saw her post on Facebook. Apparently she doesn't have time for we "judgemental" people---she's too busy tending her sick child sufferng from vaccination poisoning. Real nice touch dragging her kid into her drama to play the sympathy card. Totally unprofessional. I certainly won't shop her store. -_-

She sounds like the kind of person who has her mind made up about what bellydance "is," and wouldn't listen to facts and good common sense if you hit her on the head with it. I won't support her any more if this is her attitude.

FYI for everyone upset about the handcuffs which was totally innocent ..I will take them down from Sharifwear !

Please ask Madam Farida why there is an entire chapter in her book on Dancers and Prostitution ..and ask Shakira why she performs with a whip and on and on ...,I am taking them the handcuffs down from Sharifwear but I am very disappointed in the judgement in the dance community ..what about people like princess Farhana who is a bursleque dancer and bellydancer ... ...or others who are strictly fusion ...are they not welcome by you personally ..as an MSW I find that upsetting ....many people dancing do not do Egyptian and that is what I personally do shall I not accept them ....I think not ...Freedom of expression in all of its forms should be welcomed period in the world ..this to me is a very puritanical mindset that has put the world in peril ..it is about the We not the Me ...Thank you for Writing ..now I have to tend to my small child that has vaccine poisoning ..I cannot be judging others I am very busy with healing my child and my work I do not have time to post and judge others I hope this makes some of you happy something else to write about in my book ... Lots of Light Nourhan

I thought the handcuffs were dumb but not something to make me boycot Sharifwear. The response on the other hand, superannoying!

I just read in a comment in her page that she has an MSW and has worked with domestic abuse victims. Wouldn't that mean "Master of social work" and not something sexual?
