Saturday, August 23, 2014: Baladi and Gesture

1:15PM to 3:15PM (check-in starts at 1PM)
BALADI: GOING DEEP

Go deep into the core of the body and find connections between the pelvis, hips, and all the way down to the soles of the feet. We'll also explore the effects of using different parts of the feet (heel, ball) for different baladi (and shaabi!) jobs.

3:45PM to 5:30PM
ORIGINAL GESTURE: USING HANDS AND ARMS FOR A SIGNATURE LOOK IN YOUR DANCE

Our arms and hands can point the way, pull focus, direct attention, direct traffic, and decorate, decorate, decorate. In this workshop, we'll be working with a variety of creative approaches to hand and arm work, and how the arms and hands can not only provide static skeletal frames for our hipwork, but can float in and shape the energy in the space that encompasses us and our audiences. We'll work with muscular, skeletal, and fluid approaches to arm and hand work, and with the idea of signature gesture: creating personal, meaningful imagery and relationships between hands, hearts, and bodies.

Sunday, August 24, 2014:
Egyptian Technique in the Reda Troupe Style

1:15PM to 3:15PM (check-in starts at 1PM)
REDA PART 1: THE ALPHABET OF KEY STEPS

We'll explore what Ranya calls the "alphabet" of common steps and combos - building a strong foundation for further work in the combos, with helpful tips for technique execution, from Mahmoud himself and from Ranya's experiences working with him; key combos will also be covered, as well as the basics of Reda's choreographic methods. This material is great for beginners to the Cairo stage style as well as experienced dancers to refresh, and for teachers to add Reda to their repertoire or expand what they already do. Ranya will offer teaching tips from Mahmoud himself and from Nesma of Spain, a specialist in Reda style, to make the process of learning the combos and floor patterns even smoother.

Reda technique will serve dancers of all styles well for learning complex footwork and patterns. In particular dancers who do modern Egyptian will benefit from Reda style training as many modern Egyptian sharqi and folkloric dancers were trained early in their own careers in this style.

3:45PM to 5:30PM
REDA PART 2: BEYOND THE BASICS

We'll work with combos in different rhythms, utilizing the alphabet building blocks and putting it together with footwork and flow for elegant styling. You'll see how the building blocks are combined to form a large variety of combos in different styles, and also get ideas for staging to use with groups. Thus style is one of Ranya's many strengths, so take advantage of her while she is on the west coast. It is fun, complex, useful, and a great way to wrap up a weekend learning with Ranya!
