Wanna-be dancer spoiling it all

Hey girls (and guys alike),
I wrote a little about this on the "what style is shakira" thread but I would have been completely off topic to go further in that thread and moreover: things got worse.
So the thing is:
My school belongs to the Institute of Political Science Paris, which has four "delocated" campuses. That means that one campus is in Paris and four others are in smaller cities all over France. Each of these campuses specialises in the studies of one region: Eastern Europe, Latin America etc...Mine is Middle East and Mediterranean. Every year we have this sports event where students from all the five campuses get together and compete in different cathegories. There is also a dance cathegory. Because the Latin American campus always competes with latino dances (and they're pretty good!) and they always win, we told ourselves we can top them (we are the "youngest" campus, established only two years ago so last year we weren't really prepared for the competition). So we decided to do oriental. We have a veil intro, a group choreography, a little bit of cane-folklore saiidi dance, a percussion part...now the thing is, I am about the only on who really is trained in oriental dance so logically I correct things and stuff. I must say, that it is a group-fun-thing, so there are thing that I myself would not admit for a real just-oriental dance competition, but hey! we're a group of girls just having a blast and a fun time. But there is one girl who really makes me go crrraaazzzyyyy! Like, she says she's the absolute professional dancer, coz she was doing a lot of shows 'n stuff...turns out, she just went to a class and had this sort of end-of-trimestre-show for friends and family. and most of the girls from her group were "self-taught" too. And it makes me crazy, coz she just wants things to be her way and she is taking it so far away from a professional performance. I think she just can't stand that I dance far better and that I "work" in a local moroccan restaurant where I dance at least two nights a week and that I have "real" costumes (I mean those last-minute-self-made costumes, that usually beginner groups wear on festival...NO OFFENSE meant, just explaining) and that I am starting to become popular in town (it is a very small town indeed...hey! just before I got home this evening, a couple spoke to me on the street, saying they saw me dance! ...ok, that's off topic, hehe). And most of all, that other people think I am better and that other people talk about me as being a dancer and not her. (like when someone asks my classmates and friends, if there's a dancer, they won't hesitate to name me).
So the think is, she really slows down the progress of preparation for the competition, she makes fuss for every little thing, she say that we absolutely have to have transparent skirts with a lot of slits in it (you know those turkish skirts? take the cheapest version and you'll see) and that we cannot (yes, she said, just like a queen, that we CANNOT...huh? since when you're my pope?) wear tights underneath although we are already the half of the group to demand it and it even looks really cute! (black transparent chiffon skirt and black tights...we tried it, looks gorgeous!).

So now, I am really hesitating to stay in the group because it just stop to be fun and became a battlefield between her and us. But the problem is, that the other girls want me badly to stay and moreover the competition is in less than two weeks and they would not find a substitute for me (neither for her...the choreo is for 8 girls and noone else would do it)!
I am really sorry for the long post, but I needed to explain everything...What would you girls 'n' guys do? would you stay or not?

If you try to challenge her for leadership it'll just look like a Battle of the Divas. The other girls will feel as if they have to take sides, and it will get very uncomfortable.

Best thing to do in a situation like this is to take the position of Democratic Facilitator. A Democratic Facilitator wants power for the people. He/she is not looking to take over and make his/her will prevail.

Every time she tries to insist on something dubious, chirp up, "Let's take a vote!" Vote on it then and there, if you can, before she can muster her forces and start a campaign.

At the very least, the other girls will feel that you are trying to keep them empowered and involved in making important decisions, instead of insisting on making decisions for them.

Great idea!

Also, you might talk discreetly with some of the other girls in the group who are tired of the fuss. Ask if THEY would consider speaking up and asking for a vote "because we don't have much time left".

And someone (maybe you) should be prepared to mention that since you're representing the academic focus of your school, it's better to err on the side of conservatism, so as not to cause a negative media incident. I hope that journalists and academics in France have better things to do than to chase such nonsense, but here in the USA there are many media stories and lawsuits over silly things that happen at colleges and universities.

Oooooeeer! Good points, da Sage.

This IS supposed to be something more like authentic Middle Eastern culture and less like the Folies Bergere, oui, Ranya?

Thanks girls! we have rehearsal tomorrow so I will talk to all the girls about this and tell them to vote for the skirts and all that. and I am going to tell the other one that she can take my assaya and my drum solo part and show us what she can do and we will vote (coz no one ever saw her do a percussion solo...and she didn't even know that such a thing like an assaya exists) to whom the part should go...but given the fact that I really worked hard on a big part of the choreo and that the girls definitely know I dance better, they will probably vote for me...
And yes kharmine, hehe, it surely is not the Folies Bergere nor the Moulin Rouge by the way. I do not know if it could have serious consequences, but I want to win the competition as a representative dancer of my campus, and not as nude-model.
Thank you girls, I'll keep you posted how it all went tomorrow! Kisses

Well, it went quite good. the competition is next week but yesterday we were dancing at a beach show organised by us students for students from other cities and it was a huge success. we finally agreed on wearing slightly longer shorts to be sure it covers it all and I did the drum solo...coz finally we said ok, let's let her do a short drum solo too, like I do 30 secs and she does 30 secs. So we tried to rehearse and I stood up first and danced and the she went like: you know guys I thought it over, if you do not want me to do it I won't (but before she saw me dance, she never said such a thing) - hehehehehe. we got a huge applause and during my drum solo people went wild. all in all we had a very fun time, only she doesn't speak to me anymore but I don't care. I know I put almost four years of hard work and lots of drills everyday into my dance so...
