taking teachers class and most likely not come up with her own lesson plan. How would you deal with this? Oh and you just got back from your vacation to find her new website with no bio or credentials, and to hear she was drumming up bussiness for herself at one of your events. What would you do?

Student, etc.

Dear Flutter,
It seems like the beginning of this post is missing...??? If it is about a student deciding she is ready to teach and setting herself up as a dancer on the web and at events, there is not much you can do. If you ban her from your events, you will be labeled a bitch who wants to control the dance scene in your community. If you let her do her thing at your events, she will probably drum up some business for herself there. If you complain about her to other dancers who do not know you and the situation, then you will look like a bitch again.
This is what you CAN do:

*Continue to give a high quality classes and performances, and do right by the dance. This will be something positive that you can do to combat the nonsense.

* Realize that you can not control what anyone else does; only how you respond.

* IF people ask your opinion of her, then respond with the facts; that she has very little training. Tell any inquirers that if they go to her website they can see that she is careful not to mention her credentials, or is lying about them(if she makes some up). Tell them that you feel is she is not really qualified to be teaching at this time. Give people sensible reasons, and not your emotional response to the situation.

* DO NOT BADMOUTH HER IN CLASS OR IN PUBLIC. ( Rip her to shreds for your own personal satisfaction, to a few VERY close dancer frinds who understand the situation!!)

* Remember that the whole Middle Eastern dance scene is full of 8 Week Wonders who go out and start dancing, teaching, way too soon, treating the dance like dirt, all because their egos can't wait for their knowledge to catch up with their need to be in the public eye.

Regards,
A'isha

Three cheers for you A'isha!!! So very well said.

You provide good quality service with intergrity and you prevail in this business no matter how many other instructors come up. I live in Hong Kong, it is such a small place we have instructors in every corner. Our studio is in the business for last 15 plus years and we are getting bigger and better all the time. Our policy is quality and good service with integrity!!!! Students try other studios and eventually they come back to us and complain about other studios and instructors. So don't worry and you carry on with all the good stuff you are doing.

All the best!!!

Belly dance community starts to grow in Hanoi only recently but I also see the same 'risk' as Flutter. One girl took some basic class and advertised her class in internet (her basic is not even acceptable yet). Another also tried to perform here and there when she's absolutely not ready for that yet. And another is trying to get whatever teacher she can find to open more and more classes and waiting to get profit (this is her idea).

But it's true we cannot avoid that. I agree with A'isha about what we can and should do in this situation. Thank you Flutter to share and thank you A'isha for your wise advice
