LOL Ranya!!! Yes, indeed. Yes, I frowned first and later I can't help but laugh. Yep! military training indeed. I didn't see a gram of sensuality or femininity in her video. Common, what are they thinking when they put out a video like this??

The first girl! I think she is from another planet in my opinion. If you see her other video, first of all she needs to learn how to wear a proper attire. Not teaching in undergarments!!! Oh puke!!!

And the worst part is her video entitled "sexy dance" which she describes as a mixture of bellydance and something else...to hip-hop music. hm...and she always does her "instructional videos" to shakira...oh yes, now that's what I call bellydance, indeed.

And she is chuwing gum!!!!!!!!!! grrrrrrrrrr. as to the previous videos I think it is not right to teach others something you eighter do not like or have no idea about.

completely agree that these two are in no position to be posting instructional videos - no matter how many times you introduce yourself as an amateur, what is the point of posting instructions if you are trying to disclaim the instructions you're giving?

True. And I was wondering, if you're doing an instructional video and you state at the beginning it's AMATUER, why would anyone want to learn from you? I shut it off only a few seconds after. Why would anyone want to learn from amateurs when there's tons of professional video material out there? I get the fact that she's wanting to share what she knows, but she's way not far enough to be teaching through video yet. There might be people actually trying to use this stuff and indeed develop bad habits without any correction whatsoever. This girl really needs some constructive criticism.... And I wonder whether her teacher knows (and approves:shok:)....

The second one came to me also as trying to teach the hearing impaired (spelling?). Something did look like army-fusion there heheh, and what was that thing she was doing with her legs during the first part? I didn't get it:think:, oh well.... I know I strongly agree with A'isha when I say it makes my blood boil to see that some people go around calling anything bellydance these days. That didn't look like bellydance to me. Things like this are indeed able to hurt the reputation of the dance.

Re: the clip Janaki posted... I have nothing to add to Janaki's post but "OMG!!!". Janaki dear, you've said it all:lol:.

Alaya, you're so right. When one doesn't know much about the dance, one shouldn't be teaching what little they know to others.

Ok that was one of the worst instructional videos ever...

Did you listen to everything she said??? OMG! And I didn't hear any Middle Eastern music throughout the entire video.
And that floorwork was... ew... Especially when she says "you can also asks some friend to join in"

Ouch. there was this thread some time ago I think discussing the clips on this particular dancer's (something holds me back from saying bellydancer) website. (http://forum.orientaldancer.net/other-dance-stuff/2652-naughty-dancing.html)

Her dancing in all of the clips I've seen is not that good, lacks grace and contains only a few moves.. Her presentation and so called 'knowledge' of the dance tells me she's only interested in goddess-stuff and porn-faces, and not the actual dance itself. :shok:...

I wonder why she put out a video, she fits perfectly in this thread... Ok rant over, I need to get off the pc and relax:mad:.

Dear Moon,
But the main problem here is that we, as dancers have made it okay by supporting stuff as belly dance that is definitively not. Every time we say its okay to dance to Shakira, wear zombie costumes, create stuff like "Bellynesian", and refer to it all as "belly dance". we are giving this kind of stuff a sort of validation. I know many people disagree with me on this, but its the truth. We are not defining our own dance very well, so how can we hold others to higher standards than we ourselves are willing to own?

A'isha

Dear A'isha, very good point. I wonder about the fact that it seems that trying to fight the image that things like 'bellynesian' and the ones you have mentioned create for the dance is very hard.
I mean, we know we cannot let things like that happen and have them ruin the reputation and image of the dance, but how can we prevent these things from happening? We know we don't want them to happen, but what other way is there to do this than to speak up about the things that are not right and hold up our own sincere standards, trying to give a good example for people that are truly willing to learn the dance and everything that comes with it?

Dear Yshka,
I have been trying to set some kind of standard for years, and get roundly criticized at every turn, but I keep on keeping on. Here are some of the things that I do:

* I set a definition for what belly dance actually is. ( Considered narrow and mean spirited by many, but appreciated and understood by just as many.)

* I make decisions when I am directing a performance, about what is good representation for the dance. I do not have shows where I allow anyone who wants to, to perform. I plan a performance based on what I would like to see on stage and then ask those who know how to do it. I pay each and every person who dances, setting a standard for respect for the dance and the dancer.

* When I am in charge of a performance, I clearly define for the audience exactly what they are seeing. If it is Beledi, Ghawazi, Fusion, a skit in Reda style, Dance Theatre, Belly Dance, or whatever. (Contrary to popular belief, I do support fusion artists and others who have something of value to give to the dance community, regardless of whether or not they are performers of authentic ethnic belly dance. I just clearly define what the audience is seeing.)

* During student nights, I clearly state when the person is a student, how long that student has been dancing, etc. I also clearly state when a professional dancer is performing since both perform at student nights.

* I make it clear to my students that this is an ethnic dance and that we owe something back to the people and cultures from which the dance comes. Along with the privilege of dancing the dance comes a responsibility.

* I try to be the best dancer that I can be, and I respect what the dance is, providing a positive example for my students. I also do not teach what I feel I do not know enough about, for example, I can dance Tunisian and Ouled Nail, but I do not teach them because I feel that my knowledge is too limited.)

Anyway, these, I think are good places to start. thank you for understanding what I am trying to say!
Regards,
A'isha

Language

Dear Group,
As moderator of this area of the forum, I just received a complaint about foul language, referring, I believe, to the post in which the word "Bullsh-t" was used. While I am not offended by swearing personally, as moderator of this area of the forum, I will ask that for the comfort of our members, we come up with ever more creative ways to express ourselves without using language that might offend.
Thank you all for your cooperation.
Regards,
A'isha

OMG!! Her floor work is obscene, and the costumes?!?!! Half her butt is hanging out of the purple one as well as the red/yellow one near the end. And at 3:03 that atrocious red cellophane 'skirt' is literally falling off from under her belt!:shok:

I couldn't watch any more after she said "explore space and time in your own way", I was laughing too much! *plays Dr Who theme*

She is the infamous "no undies" belly dancer from UK:lol::lol:!!!!

Floor work is too porno!!! She is know to do this kind of stuff. I think she is worse than the other 3 clips I put out.

Hi Yshka,

It is a great great question you have raised about how to prevent this kind of stuff. It is hard to prevent or stop this kind of stuff. As long as people like us keep shouting what is right, that itself is good enough to educate people. Everthing in life comes with good and bad. When I see stuff like this, I get mad, but I feel so happy and satisfied that I am doing something right and good.

Dear A'isha,

Great answers!! As I said to you many times I support every thing you do to this artform 200%. I don't care what someother people think, we need people like you..bellydance need people like you...stubborn fighters LOL!!!!! Seriously, my 3 cheers to you.

Hugs
Janaki
