I feel very little if any engagement of my glutes when I do hip slides. I do them Egyptian style in which both legs remain straight but not locked throughout the movement.

I feel these almost entirely along the muscles at the side of my waist. Could be my body shape, or my specific training, tho.

Keep the low abs pulled in to prevent your hip from overextending itself (for lack of a better word). You can overstretch the hip flexor if you don't, and that can cause pain -- but more on the side of the hip than the actual glute.

as Aziyade has written.

are you getting pain or tension in the glute muscle or is it in the hip?

I used to relax too much and push out too far so I used to feel it in my hip if I over extended.
Now it's much more in my abs, it's softer but feels stronger.
