Stealing a thread idea from Princess here:
Someone mentioned "diploma-mania" and the desire to be certified or licensed or otherwise have external recognition for bellydance training. I have two questions about that:
ON TEACHER CERTIFICATION:
1. In the US, we don't really have any governing body that grants "licenses" to dancers or dance teachers. Organizations (like DanceMasters) and individual universities can grant diplomas or certify members, but their criteria isn't controlled by the government or any one ruling body.
Do we in the US actually NEED some type of government agency stepping in and licensing dance teachers like we license beauticians and cosmetologists? You know, where you would have to attend state-approved training, and take a test to pass your certification? What do you think? Does this process actually WORK in other countries?
ON STUDENTS:
2. If you have a student who is highly motivated by "rising through the ranks" and likes the idea of some type of "certification" or external validation for her progress, what do you do? Short of printing out a "diploma" on your home computer, and encouraging her to rise through intermediate and advanced "levels" of classes -- how do you motivate her? Do you encourage her to go through existing dance certification programs like Hadia's or Suhaila's or Ansuya's, or do you DISCOURAGE diploma-mania, or what? Hoe do you teachers handle these students?
I appreciate your thoughts!
