Default Why cant I interpret Shik Shak Shok?

I just cannot seem to dance to Shik Shak Shok, I dont know how to interpret it and I feel like Id have to dance too fast. Im obviously not at professional level yet but Im not new to it either, Ive been studying for over 4 years but rather inconsistently. Is this something basic that every dancer should be able to do?

Shik Shak Shok is the first song any of my students hear when they start. First week we just walk to it. Then I put it away while we use lots of easy pieces and on the eighth week I pull it out again and let them see how much they have learnt.

Yes, it is a difficult piece, but after 4 years it should be able to be at least danced to in some way. Keep in mind it is beledi - so no, you can't really do orientale to it. If you want some ideas, Shareen el Safy used it in her Beledi Drum Solo video. I think as a performance piece she ash put far too much in it - but it'll give you some ideas - and you'll get to learnt some great moves and combos.

Maybe another song would be better? Probably something besides Rompi, Rompi though.

I must be a very bad bellydancer But I have never ever before heard (of) this song until I just looked it up at youtube!

It would not be my choice of music to dance on... ever... I guess... Much too hyperactive and annoying for my taste...

Yes, I have never liked it much either. I'd rather hear a million versions of Leylet Hob.

shik shak shok seems hard because the music seems to be going too fast
but i think if you focus on underlying rhythms, it will be easier to interpret
you don't have to dance like the energizer bunny to it
    haha

One of the first pieces most of us hear and dance to when students, yes. I've danced to it many many times, and can't stand the sound of it now. It's very intense to dance to and is quite a hard one.

Its not one of my favourites either. There is so much nicer beledi songs out there find one that speaks to you and dance to that.

    AAAAAHHHHH I HATE IT!!!!!!!

I was performing last week with a drummer. The organisers said they wanted a 15 minute drum solo, to which we politely pointed out that no, they really really didn't want a 15 minute drum solo, as it would be boring and the belly dancer would probably melt in a pool on the floor! So I picked a song to dance to & foolishly left the ipod unattended. The drummer decided to put on shik shak shok for me to dance to 'because he likes the tabla in it' so being a co-operative thing I tried it again, after having avoided it for years.

Ugh, it was awful!! It takes me such concentration to NOT end up going into hyperdrive to that song and mentally I wasn't prepared. I would have preferred the 15 minute drum solo to that!!!!

So, I have now officially decided to never ever dance to that goddawful song again, never never never! I have tried to come to terms with it, but I still hate it!

    Phew, tantrum over!
