Are there any DVD's that teach Khaleegy style dance

For a long time I have wondered about certain movements Ive seen incorporated into bellydance, but I couldnt put my finger on what what they were. I just realized that those were Khaleegy style and also the instrument used sounds like a bagpipe many times? What instrument is this? Please excuse my ignorance on this topic but I am very interested to learn more and I cannot find any instructional info......

I know of no instructional videos, however there are a few performance videos (from the Gulf, not western dancers) that are very good and helpful. The are produced and marketed by Saut Wa Soura, and occasionally you can find them on e-bay or from on line vendors.

Aisha Azar has some good information on her website: OBSERVATIONS ON SAMRI.

I consider her to be the best instructor of this style.

Kay Hardy Campbell Arabian Gulf Folklore ~ Kay Hardy Campbell Writer, Lecturer, Middle East Specialist, is also knowledgeable, having lived in the Gulf area, but she appears to modify (make them big) the authentic movements, that are very subtle, for western audiences (Which I don't think is justified or necessary) Kay has some links to videos Blog ~ Kay Hardy Campbell Writer, Lecturer, Middle East Specialist

A lot of workshops that claim to teach Khalegie are teaching a version which is souped up and way more energetic than what people of the gulf actually do. I remember my first workshop with Aisha in this style, she showed some videos and I asked if the video player was working correctly because the movements were so subtle I thought maybe they were in slow motion.

Khalegie is one of my favorite folkdances. Good, authentic, music is hard to find though.

Without hearing the music you are referring to I can't tell what instrument it may be... perhaps a nay?

Amera's DVD

Amera Eid worked for many years in the Gulf and has recently put out a khaleegy DVD. I haven't seen it and am unsure whether it is straight folkloric khaleegy or khaleegy/raqs sharqi fusion - or both. I have been to her workshops where she has taught it straight then incorporated it into more modern music. Amera's DVD blurb

Actually, I didnt mean a flute LOL, the music I mean sounds like a bagpipe , rather , any idea what instrument this is?

Thanks, I went on youtube to see what a "mizmar" sounds like and that is in fact what I was referring too :D, so now I can research that. Does anyone know whether the mizmar is commonly to dance traditional Egyptian style to? Im guessing a no? If not, what sort of dancing is typically associated with it? Thanks

Depends on what you mean by "traditional Egyptian style". The mizmar is perfect for Saidi, which of course is traditional Egyptian folkloric.

There could be a mizmar brief section in an Egyptian Oriental piece, since many made-for-dancing songs contain brief folkloric sections, but you probably wouldn't use a full-length song played on mizmar for Oriental.

Thanks Shira, did you know that I first stumbled across your website probably more than 8 years ago, looking for arabic lyrics lol? I was a dumb teenager and certainly knew nothing about bellydance. Then I saw it again later for reviews on bellydance dvd's and many other things concerning bellydance. You are an excellent source of info:D

Dear Lydia
Very interesting video's both.
Question:
What is the occation and the dance at the second video?
Also some of the women are wearing metal kind of covering half face. Is this traditional for Gulf area? and also one woman that her feet was filmed was wearing something that reminded me indian pants and costume.
So any hint?

kisses

Hi Maria ...the ..thing that looks metal to you is the traditional ,,burka,,it is made from fabrick but than they use a color to make it looking like that...the pants is just a colorfull trouser that they wear under the galabaya what is then covered with abaya so the skin of the legs is always covere and sometimes very colorfull...the occasion was the dubai shoppping festival ....and the little scarves they dance with is a traditional dance ...differant than the ,,na,a shat,, the ,,hairdance,, that everybody is always refers to as khaleegy dancing......there are many differant traditonal dances in this area

It is hard to really tell from a trailer, but this looks very different from what Aisha Azar teaches. The trailer didn't say where in the Gulf, each area has it's own unique version.

Aisha doesn't teach hip downs, rather, hip pushes to the side, some of the other movements look familiar.
