Hey,

I was wondering what types of dance do you think compliments belly dance. Like, I think Hula compliments belly dance and is a good dance to take if your also taking belly dance.:D

I've taken Polynesian dance and while it looks similar, the technique is quite different. But you are right, it's good to take along with bellydance. I also agree on Turkish Rom; Hasapiko Greek dancing and salsa is somewhat compatible as well, in my own experience.

If you are talking similar movements - try jazz. In fact many "belly dancers" are doing jazz in bedleh :D Problems arise when you are unsure what defines one rather than the other. If you aren't careful you'll end up doing bellydance-jazz fusion without meaning to (if you mean to that's different)

Any Middle Eastern folk styles will also fill you out as a belly dancer so you know how to move to Sa`iidi or debke or khaleegy or Turkish Rom when you hear it (many classic orientale pieces pull in these influences).

Belly dance is rooted in folklore, so any folkloric style is great for improving your belly dance.

Beyond that, it depends on what style of belly dance you do. For example, ballet is great for modern oriental/Reda style, and hip hop and bharat natyam are great for ATS.

I was just thinking of this last night when I went to my first African dance class, which I thought was pretty complimentary.

I would say that ballet is a good compliment to most types of dancing, not only belly dance. Ballet is the foundation of many modern dances, and has influenced the oriental dance a lot. If you take ballet you´ll build up strenght, posture, control and flexibility.
I´ve been thinking of taking up ballet again myself, just for that reason. To compliment the belly dancing.

Omg, i looked up that butoh stuff on youtube! Wtf is that?! It´s sooo disturbing and freaky that i kinda liked it actually. As an artform it really plays it´s role well, because it does what i think good art are suppose to do: Creating controversy and making people react, in one way or another. :shok:

But i dont think i will stop bellydancing and start butoh dancing instead...

LOL the screencap on that video you posted Safran was freaky enough to make me scared to watch it. How sad is that??? LOL:rolleyes: I need to toughen up. Maybe in the morning I will attempt to watch it as I am curious.

I would like to add that in my opinion caribbean dance is very complimentary to bellydance:) Not that I am biased or anything;)

That is why I had it saved - I was very impressed by the Baba Yaga connection. I was brought up with the Russian cartoons, and in them Baba Yaga was a completely different character from what was portrayed in the clip. Butoh still very much remains a mystery to me though.

Walladah, we lost quite a few posts when the forum went through a move between servers. But it is good to see that the discussions are going back to usual!

I learned about Baba Yaga and what she

... symbolises from Clarissa Pinkola Estes's phsychology book "women who run with the wolves". Estes analyses the myth of Baba Yaga as the despised dark nature of women, especially the nature revealed after a certain age. She connects the despising to women and their wisdom to the despise we express to nature, esp. the wild nature we do not like that much, like the swamps where Baba Yaga lives.

My question is: how would Baba Yaga bellydance?

This is not a dance but Martial Arts was a great help to me, been doing it sense I was four :D I've taken hip hop, and modren dance.

I have studied Native american dance, which I mix with my Belly dance style.

All the ones everyone has said sounds great as well.
