How's the weather?

Wait till you've been through a hurricane at sea.... on a ship.... with a busted engine.

Not quite have been on the dinky Mona's Isle trying to get into Ramsey harbour (unsuccessfully - had to lay off for 2 stomach churning hours) with motor bikes coming loose from their "moorings" and only the drunks up right.:)

ooooooo. Stop it, ya'all. I'm about to need Dramamine just reading about it.

Clear! Sunny! 29 degrees F! Howling wind! A classic January day in central Wyoming. I think I'll stay in and clean house.

Dear Shanazel,
In the past few days we have had a thaw and wind. Now we are having a slight freeze and this A.M. some snow. Nothing too scary for the first time in many weeks. The problem is that this is our first "real winter" in a while and we just forgot what it was all about.
Regards,
A'isha

I hear you. The seas around GB can be pretty grim. After 2 years at sea world wide I came home and went sea fishing from Bridlington with some friends in a small boat ... guess who was sea sick for the first time in his life? :shok: After an hour I was afraid I was going to die, after two hours I was afraid I wasn't. No sight has ever been more welcome than the sea wall of Bridlington harbour.

Why don't you just tell me about it, Granddad? I suspect there are some things I'd rather learn from the experiences of others. I grew up on the Texas Gulf coast and went through one big hurricane (Carla) and several more that were "tropical storms" by the time they made landfall. But onboard a ship? No, thank you. I do know a geophysisist (I can never decide how many isisis to put in that word) who went through a hurricane locked in a sort of protective egg tossing in the gulf after the oil rig he was on got hit by a hurricane. Just thinking about it makes me seasick.

Ahaarrrgh Jim Lad! It were on the feast of St Ethelburga back in the summer of '71 ... or was it '72? I remember it like it was yesterday (what the heck did I do yesterday?).
We was bound from Santos in Brazil (or maybe it were Rio) for fabled Nippon and the barky was sailin' three sheets before the wind through the China sea ....

 Don't offer to listen unless you suffer from insomnia and are seeking a cure. Given the time I could go on ...and on... and on...

We once took an overnight ferry across the Bay of Biscay in what was probably technically classed as "a bit of a breeze". Bad enough; hubby who "never gets seasick" throwing up, me desperately trying not to on account of having to be responsible parent and look after small child (who was fine after a plate of chips) while the ship lurched and rose and slapped down into the water again with an almighty thump...

On topic - still cold! I'm sure the forecast said it was supposed to warm up today.

Nice to read it's not just c-c-cold here. People are actually skating on natural ice again, I think for the first time in about 12 years. Yep, cold.

Biscay has a reputation for being really, really nasty. Even ancient mariners acknowledge that it can be a real pig. There's no shame in being seasick in Biscay.

Today's blowy and cold in the East. Definitely not the sort of day that would tempt me in to trying sea fishing again!

I know a song about a cabin boy who gave birth aboard ship in the Bay of Biscay. Shall I sing it for you? I learned it from a Gordon Bok record, so I have to sing it an octave high, but still...

Sunny! Clear! 34 degrees F (about 0 C)! Howling wind! (Oh, am I repeating myself? Sorry, but at least the weather is condusive to cleaning house.)

A'isha, I have an embroidery design student who lives in BC, and apparently they are getting smacked with unusually harsh weather, too. Just think how beautiful spring will be for you when it finally rolls around this year.

Weather

Dear Shanhazel,
I rarely get discouraged about the weather until February, which is usually is a sort of mud coloured month here, with muddy snow, dank looking roads and plant life, grey skies, etc. After a couple of weeks of that, I do get to feeling a little low. so far so good, though our snow is now black and icky looking.
I do love the seasons here, with Fall being my ultimate favorite.
Regards,
A'isha

I am always glad when we slide through February, A'isha. I really hated January and February when I lived in the San Joaquin Valley- weeks and weeks on end of fog trapped beneath an inversion layer that refused to lift. At least snow is pretty part of the time.

This morning about 7:30, Princess Dog and I took a walk in the fog. I got to leave off the Yak Tracks for the first time in ages and we actually got fairly deeply into the park, since the snow was mostly packed enough to only sink in high enough to have to lift my knees about 6 inches with many of my steps, which after awhile became a study in agony as that is not part of my usual regimen of exercise. Anyway the fog was wonderful. I must admit I like a few days here and there of swirls of grey mist and dark dripping trees. I just don't want it as a permanent life style.

A'isha

It was not bad today, but a Siberian front is moving through. Dangerous, bitter cold temps are expected in northern Minnesota of -25 F with windchills reaching -60F to -70 F. BRRRR!!! I hate when it gets that cold. School is cancelled so the kids do not have to stand outside in the cold weather waiting for the school buses. Cars do not want to start in that weather, your nose hairs freeze when you walk into the grocery store, you simply cannot warm up whatever you do in this weather. I wish I was heading south to Texas with my parents:)

We have been having our January thaw and the weather has been gorgeous: clear and sunny, temperatures in the high fifties, no more than a reasonable amount of wind. We'll probably get zapped by a winter storm this weekend, but right now it is absolutely beautiful. I wandered around the yard to look at the hardy plants that start defying winter about now and thought about srping gardening. If it wasn't for this annual week or so of good weather in January, winters would be a lot harder to bear.

January

Dear Shanazel,
We have had foggy nights and cold, damp days. The world looks pretty beautiful, with that special frost that fog creates, when my dog and I go walking in the morning. Yesterday, during the day the fog turned into frost and fell sort of like a light snow. It was fascinating to see. Rumor is that we are going to get about 13 new inches of snow this week-end. It must be the same storm that is going to your house. I would not mind an inch pr two to cover up the ugly mud colored snow but 13 inches is just more than I am up for at the moment. (BAwk, Bawk, BAwk!!! I'm such a chicken...)
Regards,
A'isha

Creeping on down toward zero degrees farenheit with about six inches of snow on the ground and more falling. I am about to go put on my boots and hat and coat and go for a late night stroll down the road. I love nights like this- NO WIND and a beautiful winter glow on the world.
