He isn't teaching is he? I don't know what the context is, but if that was being presented as belly dance without telling the audience that these are beginner students, I would be really annoyed. Presenting it as belly dance with any sort of authority behind it (e.g. a teacher being involved) is bringing belly dance into disrepute IMO. :protest:

... I'm sorry, but they meant to be a profesional ballet . And... yes, yes, he's the teacher. If you allow me to, I'll send you a video of him dancing. I don't want to criticize anyone in a bad way, but images can say more than words. I hardly write/speak english, so it's easier to show it. Feel free to feel as annoyed as I was when he showed me this.

Nope, they suppose to be pros, they even get paid for their shows. He's the teacher and the girls belong to his ballet, the coreography is not of my teacher, I posted one in another... place? Don't know the name. Is it thread? XD
He's a teacher!!! These are professional belly dancers? Maybe I should move over to Mexico - I could become the number one Diva and top master teacher (and I don't even teach). Honestly, this is a beginner student level performance with an uninspired choreography that skirts around the edge belly dance. If these were 6-12 months students, I'd say "Well done. You're on your way."

You have seen real belly dancers haven't you? Tahiya Karioka, Fifi Abdou, Lucy, Dina, Amani, Sema Yildiz, Tulay Karaca, Jamila Salimour, Hadia? And there are plenty of men too - Yousry Sharif, Tito, Mohamed Kazafy - even Horacio.

Hahahahahaha, I didn't say I thought they were pros, they call themseleves like that. And he calls himself a teacher, not me, or the world, I want to believe not me nor the entire humanity are blind.
As I said, I don't want to criticize in a bad way, but, that video says everything I didn't have to.

Hey - you're stealing my gig! LOL I was thinking the same thing as I was watching. Of course you would just have to trust me since you've never seen me dance...

The performance is fine for newer students, but someone at that level should not be teaching (male or female). Without the basics mastered he definitely shouldn't be thinking about fusion. I have to admit that now I'm even more curious about your teacher. I will try to find the other thread.

I don't see what you are doing is criticizing so much as asking for clarification. I'm thinking you have a wide variety of ability in your area, and I'm not surprised you are confused. That's why we are here - to be your wise dance counsel. :shok:  And don't worry about your English. It's way better than my Spanish (ola, senorita! ha ha).

I'm half Mexican, so I can't do much better than say "I'm hungry" (and I can't even spell that in Spanish, I can just say it). >.>;;;

That's supposed to be professional dance and he's teaching?!!! Wow.

And another vote for your English being just fine. Escribes Ingles muy bien. :D (is that right? Excuse familiarity rather than formal politeness, and lack of accents; it takes 10 mins to find how to do them on this keyboard).

That might make her a good dancer - but not necessarily a good belly dancer. Belly dance is much more than physical technique.

Absolutely, absolutely. Shakira is an excellent dancer. I like her. But whether or not she is a bellydancer is debatable. (Oh no. I didn't think about introducing Shakira to this thread. Now we have sexuality, Indian fusion, fusion, children bellydancing, AND Shakira in ONE thread. Good heavens.) but my point is that Kashmir is right, it's so much more than technique. But now that I have seen the video, I'm not so sure about the technique...?

Kashmir said:
Where it comes from – the Middle East – it is a social dance for men, women and children. In many traditional societies women do not dance in front of men – because they do not socialize with men. But if they do, they are not performing sexual positions – they are dancing. It is perfectly okay for children to belly dance.

Seconded. This is very important to understand. Bellydance has changed because people perform it more, on the international scene. But at its roots, it is a more social dance--not choreographed, not on a stage. It is danced with friends (usually of the same gender) and family. I would NOT consider bellydance to be sexual. Yes, my hips move when I bellydance. Yes, to be blunt, one's hips move while having sex. But one's hips are also integral to most kicking formations in Taekwondo, which I studied for two years. Would one also say that Taekwondo is sexual? This is an extreme example, but I'm just trying to say that people overreact to bellydance, and unfortunately some teachers/performers capitalize on that because it sells. Therefore you see the performances like this (this was on another thread today and I think it's relevant)

Simply put, this video is a prime example of how bellydance goes very very WRONG when people misinterpret.

I will say this time and time again, bellydance is a beautiful, expressive, and emotional form of art, meant to be enjoyed by ANYONE.

I don't really don't what the dance scene is like in Mexico, but that video with the man in the blue costume was a little disappointing. The style is fine, it is not disrespectful, but he does not have the experience to be a teacher.

The only Mexican dancer I know is Desiree of Tijuana, and she is pretty good. Check out her videos if you like.

*sigh*...This is the kind of thing you just have to learn about, bit by bit. Keep talking with us on this forum, watch youtube videos, and browse online resources!

I'm sure many people dance better than them. It's a big trauma to see them getting payed for what they do, if they danced for free, it could be acceptable, as they can be gettig experience. I'll send you the link in a private message, it's a coreography she made.

Muchas gracias, lo intento. And it's OK, don't worry, I understand. I'm 20, so you can perfectly refer to me in a non-familiar way. n_n

When I was little, my father strictly forbade me to use the familiar tense, even for other children. He was afraid I'd accidentally use it with the wrong person and offend someone.

I still address children as "usted". ;)

OH. MY. RA. :shok: I can't believe this is even real. Am I alive? .-.

AAAnd, I just posted a link in the videos section, so you can compare the guy in the video and a pro (real one) dancer, both mexicans

Eso quiero, por eso me uní al foro. Quiero aprender; conocer opiniones, personas, tradiciones y gustos de otros países y personas, limitarse a una sola opinión sería quedarse en la ignorancia. Spanish. ¡YAY! \O/

Thank you all for being so kind at me.
