Making appliques

does anybody have any advice, links or suggested books/literature on instructions for making appliques?
i have been looking at formal dresses in many boutiques at home and been trying to figure out how they get to bead/sew on the appliques to the dresses..

(yes i intend to make my own costumes)

any ideas are welcome
