Random Encounters with Bellydance Items

I have a question for everyone about accessories and props, specifically how to identify the 'real thing' from a remake. I know that there are out there some highly sought after items in limited supply, but you never can tell when something is going to turn up in a thrift store or at a flea market.

 What are identifying markings/features of rare and awesome things like El Coyote Finger Cymbals? Or Saroyan Swords? How to tell the real thing from a knock off?

Thoughts? Photos of the real thing? Other great items to be on the lookout for?

Thanks in advance!

I don't have a clear answer for you about the El Coyotes, but I did buy a pair on ebay last year and they are one hole. Two different size domes make two different tones, love them. Here are some pics of all four, close up for pattern and rim differences. They don't say El Coyote anywhere on them.

ezmasiddiqah -thanks so much! At least now I know what to look for. These look beautiful. Hoping someday to get lucky enough to run across a pair.

If you ever decide to let those go or run across any others, I have been searching for a set for *years* and would love them. :)

Weight is often a good clue. Good quality swords, zills and costumes all have weight for their size, they feel hefty.

Good swords are balanced. Good zills have a nice sound quality.

Real coins are thick and heavy, usually silver or copper. it's usually pretty easy to tell the difference between a fake coin and a real one. Top quality fakes, like the Saroyan coins, are a lot thinner, but still feel heavy. Brass or gold coins are never real coins, but can still be quality fakes.

If a "designer" costume doesn't have the label, it's probably not. Good quality costumes have thicker fabric, cheap costumes use thin, flimsy fabric. Sequins are inexpensive. Sequin or beaded appliques are a step up. Real glass fringe is better than plastic beaded fringe. Better quality costumes often have more padding and better lining. Also, the designs are better. Check out the "Thought Provoking Costumes" thread for ideas.

When shopping second hand, the quality of the item counts.
