Sadie

My friend took Sadie's WS and she told me that why Sadie started to focus on more techniques and crazy isolations, because she didn't want people to look at her face. :shok: She was very shy, and she didn't people to look at her face while she is dancing, so she started to develop all crazy isolation movements of hips and torso, so people more focus on her hip moves than her face.

As said before, she is beautiful, she has great technique, and personally, I love watching her! Yes, sometimes some of the choreography can be a bit too suggestive for my taste, but that does not mean she is not good or not a good teacher. Perhaps the reason some feel that passion is missing is because it IS choreographed?????

I remember the first time I saw that video on youtube of Sadie doing the drum solo that has about 10 million views. I was impressed but not captivated. I've watched several videos of hers. I have not been a fan of her costumes (although that is entirely just personal preference, she has a beautiful figure) or her performances. Talented, beautiful woman, just she has never left me hanging on the edge of my seat with my eyes glued to her. Although I can't fault her dancing. I just put it down to the subjective nature of dance. Considering how everyone has a different opinion of what an amazing performance is, I think it is great that belly dance has so much "wiggle room" and variety. THere is something for everyone.

I personally find her mechanical and too premeditated, but that is just my opinion which at te end of the day, doesn't mean much lol. I like a dancer who appears to be completely into the music and caught up in the moment and she never comes across that way, to me anyway. But again to each their own. Still if I had an opportunity to I would attend a workshop of hers.

Why do you think she is a good belly dancer to watch. I find her technically so sharp yet she lacks the emotion of many Egyptian style dancers, a connection to the music and makes me feel tired watching her;)
Mind you I haven't seen her live and that might be very different. I heard high praise of her from IBDC. Did you go?
I saw her live at IBDC and thought she gave an amazing performance, which was pitched just about right for the occasion (given that it was an "East meets West" night with a variety of styles and all the performers were excellent in their own way). However, I've seen quite a few videos where I am less than impressed - I agree with the "technical sharpness" but this is only one aspect of dancing and agree about the lack of emotion. I think she needs to take some sound advice re her choice of projects in the future in order to keep up her reputation.

Cough! A "shy" dancer that has simulated sex on stage in front of a family audience? Or takes part in a video like this Sadie and Kaya in trashy music video (Bhuz) Now that's spin!
Yeah. I know. I never Sadie's fan and I never even think about taking her WS in first place anyway. My friend who took her WS told me this story. I think Sadie told her students this story, but again, I never take her WS, so I have no idea. I don't know when was her infamous Kama Sutra Rakkasha performance with Kaya, but my friend took her WS in 2008, so maybe Sadie tried to clean up her image? Clearly my friend don't know anything about Kama Sutra thing, and neither did I. But I'm not her fan anyway, so whatever...

BTW, we talk about the video in YouTube thread. http://www.bellydanceforums.net/video-clips-youtube/11919-sadie-kaya-erotic-music-video.html

I just re-read the thread and I don't see bitching - just a lot of opinions along the lines that the technique is amazing, emotional connection does not come across, and allusions to the fact that some of what she does is rather skanky. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm really not jealous of that.

Seriously, one of her recent things with Kaya is being discussed here and on Bhuz, and this thread is positively... er, positive about her.

I am sooo jealous of a dancer who is bringing the name of bellydancing into disrepute, who takes part in a highly sexual conversation in a taxi talking about girl on girl action and is part of a music video with an offensive racist orientalist theme and soft porn images..and would inevitably be levelled at youngsters .
Fluidhips, I am sorry you have been banned in some ways but then you come across as too limited in your replies to indulge in an intelligent discussion and defend your idol. If you go over to BHuz.com you wil see a similar discussion and very little if any defence of the direction Sadie and Kaya have taken their dance career. Try calling BHuzzers out in the same way why don't you please. They'll eat you for breakfast
But never mind dear no doubt you got a few hits on your website.
awww jellous haters unite!;)

Fluidhips, I'm going to write here the same thing I wrote on Bhuz:

When advertised belly dancers behave badly, we are ALL affected by their bad behavior.

If any of us have the words "Belly dancer" on our websites, we ARE affected by this. Because it's not just in my cornfield that people are a little shy about hiring a dancer to begin with. I can't tell you how many times I have to reassure clients that I don't take my clothes off or perform suggestively. If I had a dollar for every time I heard "Now there will be CHILDREN at this event, so we can't have anything too risque," I'd be able to buy all those new Bellas I want.

Where do people get that idea? You think from the old black and white movies, or Orientalist paintings and travelogues? I think not. I think they get that idea from the public display of the BAD CHOICES that some so-called belly dancers make, and we all get to suffer guilt by association because of it.

I have never in my life given a performance that I felt was inappropriate, lewd, vulgar, or anything other than totally respectful to the dance and the originating cultures -- AND YET, I find myself constantly apologizing for those who have. When someone started teaching at a porn shop here, I PERSONALLY got the third degree from clients and event organizers, demanding I explain myself -- how could I be associated with such trash?

Not to be rude, but seriously -- the next time you lose a gig because the organizer is afraid you will dry-hump the birthday guests, or when the local Girl Scouts organization tells you they can't have you teaching anymore because they can't be associated with 'adult entertainment' -- THEN come back to this thread and praise these two all up and down for their liberating artistic expression.

Yeah, I'm really jealous I can't get some big black dude to have sex with me on stage in front of an audience which includes kids.

The taxi cab conversation was back in 2002- I think before the days of Sadies' bellydance career taking off.. it seemed staged to me too, bet she regrets it now!
I am not a fan of Sadies- I am an Egyptian style fan so love the emotion attached to the dance and not purely technique. However, she is a highly acclaimed American cabaret dancer and is sought after to teach all over the world, you cannnot doubt her technical ability, her isolations and muscle control are amazing but is it Middle eastern dance?
No, I dont think so, no cultural feeling there.

Fluidhips, please give this serious thought.

I do not consider any of these posters to be motivated by jealousy. We have top notch dancers from all over the world on OD, Tribe, and Bhuz who have dedicated their lives to belly dance as an art. Many have more talent and longstanding international fame than Sadie or Kaya. The community has chosen to speak out.

I see righteous indignation and anger over the obscene public behavior these two continuously choose. We all get tarred with the same brush. We are judged by common public perception, but that's reality. Life isn't fair.

Sadie and Kaya have no regard for the fact that they have:

-lowered the reputation of the dance and dancers
-perpetuated stereotypes of Arabs and African Americans
-degraded women
-performed simulated sex acts in front of an audience that included children

Also, because Sadie and Kaya do these things in public as belly dancers; other professional dancers are deprived of potential income by lowering our public standing in regards to venues and students. I choose to speak out against such behavior because it is wrong.

The only people who should be ashamed are Sadie and Kaya.

Jane we have always had to battle with the reputation of this dance- I doubt this will ever change.
In middle eastern countries there are bellydancers who also work as prostitutes etc, we cannot escape the bad reputation this dance has attached to it. Worry about yourself and your own behaviour, act with dignity and people will repsect you.
Can we control what others do or how they behave? No- leave them to it, we may not like it but all we can do is try to educate people along the way.

True. The dance has had it's share of problems in it's own culture. I view this situation very differently.

I can't control what Sadie and Kaya do, but I can choose how I react to it. There is no reason to support, defend, or remain quiet about those who perpetuate the worst negative stereotypes.

I will stand up and speak out.

Using your own theory on yourself, that would make you so very jealous of all of us because you're bath mouthing us now?

Read again what is actually being said, or just go practice your "sexy" Kaya expression in the mirror.
