I was chatting to my teacher yesterday, and it turns out she was there when this was performed (At the Bellyfusions festival in France a couple of years ago). She said it was intended as a comedy dance, and the audience found it absolutely hilarious. It is possible that French humour does not translate well to the rest of the world...

Maybe the context got lost because it's an assembly of clips? Maybe there are references to local things, things happening in the country or local belly dance community?

It's all so much easier when you know you are meant to be laughing.

Then again it does rather take away the fun of a good WTF moment.

Oh, that does make sense that this is what they intended because it is playful. For me it's still incoherent, but perhaps it is indeed my lack of Gallic background.

...As for the Occupy Portland thing...

Crunchy pretentious hipsters with absolutely no rhythm trying to make an overworked political statement to a Cake song. Who'd have ever thought that wouldn't be great dance art?

I'm not going to be able to get that out of my brain for a while.

Also, isn't it a golden calf, not a fully, uh, fledged bull? Ed: according to the YT comments, it's a mockup of the Wall Street bull.

I ran out of patience and quit watching. Did Moses ever come throw the tablets at them?

I agree it would have been improved had there been some smiting.

Ha ha, love those dancing gorillas. I really like that song, does anybody know where to get it and what the lyrics mean?

The one of the couple is one of those videos that makes me think "Just admit you want to watch porn...don't pretend you're watching dancing"...especially when she's sticking her bare butt up in the air and he's placing a sword on it. That's not dancing, that's showing your butt.

I don't want to post names...but there is an amateur "belly dancer" on You Tube that drives me nuts. She can belly dance...I recognize the isolations and can see her doing combinations. But every video I tried to watch of hers...she is either in some lingerie bra, or she's topless or lifting up a top to flash lingerie at the camera.

I don't mean to sound prudish...if you are of age according to the laws of your country...and there are controls to make sure your audience is consenting adults..and you want to do online strip shows...go right ahead. Strip on a web site, strip in a bar...your choice to make.

I'm just saying...if you're going to do that...admit what you're doing...call it a "strip show"...you're not belly dancing if your focus is on making sure everybody sees your body parts...you're stripping.

Oh yes, she labels them as her bellydance videos. In her latest one that I saw she is completely topless. Her back was to the camera, but you could tell she had no top on. I didn't watch all of it when I saw that.

I feel weird, but I had to find these videos to sate my curiosity. Number one I was really amazed at what pops up when you type in bellydance into youtube and two I'm kind of leaning towards what LadyLoba is saying.

Both video's are totally WTH! No comment for the stripping and the other one, where was the belly dancing in that? And what costume is that? Well obviously it had to be modest because of the weird contortions, but strange.

I need a glitter cape to wear when I throw glitter on men randomly laying on floors. Bizarre all around: concept, music, costume, movement, props, just everything. And the spiritual contortionist belly dance concept... Why would anyone think these things are a good idea to actually do in public? Just too strange for me.

Another one that's in terrible taste and NSFW. Ick, ick, ick. And Sherwood Forest?!?!?! Huh?

Take solace in the fact that not a single thing about the movie can be taken seriously, ergo no one should consider this actual "belly dance."

I hope not, but it did come up disturbingly early in search for "belly dance" on YouTube.

By the gods, that really was done by someone who saw bellydancing & thought 'Hah! Anyone can do that!' and proceeded to prove herself very, very wrong - on film, where it will remain to embarass her forever!
