How many of you use stage names and how did you come up with them?

I've used "Samira" for 17 years. I got it from a drummer friend who liked the name and suggested it. It came in handy to have a "stage" name when I dance professionally, but if I were just starting to dance today, I'm not sure I'd need it. Nonetheless, I've been Samira for nearly as long as I was just plain "Alisa"...and it has stuck. I was even quoted in our recent news paper as "Samira Tu'Ala"....hahahaha. My facebook profile is Samira. My MySpace profile is Samira. I am nearly always Samira now.

I adopted a 'stage' name even though I am definitely not ever going to professional - but it's part of putting on my 'dance persona' when we do performances, it helped me refine and clarify some of the emotions that bellydance gives to me, and it's fun!
I took ages to come up with a name that felt right, but I finally settled on Sahar because it means 'Dawn', and my real name has a similar meaning.
It is important to know what it means in several of the languages of the Middle East, though, because some names don't translate well!
Sahar can also be Zorah (which I love!), Zorana in Slavic while in French, you'd be called 'Roxanne'.
Like Samira I use the same name online - Adiemus. I adopted that name many years ago when I made some major changes in my life, and it represented a heap of things. Adiemus means 'We will draw near'.

I chose my dance name after long consideration when I was still infatuated with bolly enough to let that influence me. If I had the chance of a do-over, I'd have gone with something Egyptian, since that's what I teach, but by the time I decided to teach Egyptian everyone already knew me as Darshiva, so Darshiva I am!

Thanks for your responses! I'm a newb with no need for a stage name but I find all the stage names I see bellydancers with to be very interesting.

My last instructor insisted we have stage names right off the bat, however, I was already an advanced dancer and we did bellygrams. Having a stage name is often a safety issue. You do not want a stalker looking you up and finding where you live. I found a name that meant the same or similar to my given name..... i.e. all are variations of Sarah. Even the beginners were told to choose a stage name before their first student performance. As someone mentioned before, it does help some "get into their dance persona", so there are 2 very good reasons to chose a dance name. You needn't base it on your given name. Maybe your given name seems dull to you and you would like an extravagant dance name to make you feel like an opulent goddess of movement. Here is your chance to choose a name you really like!

I absolutely love fairies
and have the best job in the world as a childrens' birthday fairy so when looking for a dance name I knew it HAD to be fairy related! Thus Perizada was born, meaning "born of the fairies" in Persian

Aveah sounds a bit Jewish, maybe look for it amongst Jewish names possibly also the spelling Ahveya/Ahveah.

I don't use a stage name, Mosaic or versions of that are just online names. I chose Mosaic as to me it represents the world's diversity - Cultures, colours, size, shapes beliefs etc and that we can all share and care through, acceptance, tolerance, joy and laughter and even in sadness & diversity. Humanity is such a wonderful mosaic of diversity.
Maybe I would use Mosaic as a dance name if I ever chose to have one

I debated the whole stage name thing for awhile but in the end just went with my name. I have always liked my name, and I'm named after my Grandmother (she is Zoe Cassandra, I'm Cassandra Zoe) who taught me my first dance move and got that whole ball rolling. I feel whether you use a stage name or your real name for dance it should represent who you are, and more so who you are when you dance.
Although stage names like "Zorah" etc as were mentioned before do at this lovely element of mystique and exoticness to it. It really is a tough call as some people do come up with some really beautiful stage names.
Cassandra, aside from being the Greek Prophet who ended up being murdered lol, from what I've read means "protector of men", "warrior" (WOO HOO lol), and someone "who entangles men" (cough*Iwouldnever*cough).
Zoe means "life" How can I not like that?
My only current debate has been whether to just go by first and last name, first, middle and last name or middle and last name... UGH decisions decisions.

That's beautiful! I love it! My online name is simply that my horse's show name is Vincent Vega, so I figure I'm Miss Vega as he owns me

Stage names rock!
I love stage names - i think they are great. Like an alter ego, in dance you should be able to become yourself and really use it to express yourself, by giving yourself a different name you can really get in to character with it!
Loads of ways to chose - could do the porn star route and go for 1st pet and mothers maiden name! or Just imagine in your mind how you want to dance and use that image to conjour up a name. A nice strong stage name sets the scene.
I am pretty new to belly dancing, but have always been in to dance. This has got me thinking though, i am going to try and think up a name for fun!
