Thomas Edison's Videos

Forgive me if these has been posted here before!

I recently found 3 videos available for download which where originally filmed by Thomas Edison featuring three belly dancers of his time. I found it very interesting to see just the change that took place between the late 1800's to the 1930's let alone the change that has taken place from the 1800's to the present!

I managed to also find 2 more videos by the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company the also feature small aspects of belly dance.

The videos can be downloaded as MPEG and Quick Time format, all of which are (naturally) very short.

Crissie Sheridan using what looks like a dress which may be the original form of Isis Wings filmed in 1897

Turkish Dancer Ella Lola filmed in 1898

Princess Raja whom actually dances with a chair in her mouth! Filmed in 1904

Karina displays some skirt work as well as a backbend Filmed in 1902

Ameta dancing with Isis Wings Filmed in 1903

Thank you for posting the youtube videos of them!

(if anyone still wants the download links still just say so and I'll try to fix them)

It's important to note that These are not all belly dancers!!!!

The ones doing something that looks like Isis wings come from the early modern dance movement (ie, similar to what Isadora Duncan was leading at that time) and NOT from Middle Eastern dance.

Isis wings are not belly dance. They are modern dance.
