not so cool for the horses!! i was there and i noticed more then 1 of the horses having gaping wounds...so i went ,,backstage,, and i took this picture ,i was then kinda adviced to leave the show if i did not wanted to get lynched...the wounds are from the things that stick out from the boots from the person riding the horse...i was frustrated and very angry for days weeks...i did not know what to do about this ...of course i can not do anything about it...the organisation of animal wellfare worldwide said that egypt is 1 of the worst places for a horse to live and that they are working on it...o well:(:( I love Egypt but the horse trouble is always hunting me when ever i go....even at the pyramids i try to lecture the boys and tell them not to abuse them so much...no use.....this forum is a blessing !! change for me to put up this picture!!!!Thanks Kayhsier you did me a big favour!!!!

This doesn't surprise me. Spurs are just so unnecessary. I saw a documentary about the plight of horses in Cairo..it just about broke my heart. Often, it's not so much that people are deliberately cruel, more that they are ignorant and the horse is just a means to an end for their income. This doesn't excuse it though. However, I did see some consideration for the horses at the stables at Giza when I rode round the pyramids. Perhaps it was just chance that that particular stable cared for it's horses, but I did not see any deliberate cruelty there.

It's not easy for a horse to execute those 'dancing' steps. Dressage is incredibly skilled for both horse and rider, so I guess the short cut using spurs is what these guys do.

There is a link on my website to the charity for working animials ACE in Egypt.

Go visit the gallery where these poor animals have come to grief if you dare!

Really, with a lot of horses, they can be necessary. They just should not be used too hard. Horses have very tough skin and a very high tolerance for pain, which causes them to often not notice leg signals. The spurs help a horse to notice it, but like I said, shouldn't be used hard. The spurs are Supposed to roll freely, and be blunt, so that they do not damage a horse, and that they roll over the skin and hair and just "bump" not jab.

It makes me very angry to see people misuse disciplinarian objects on horses.

I have a horse of my own, and although I have to use a whip with him, I never hit him with it. The most he ever gets is a light tap to tell him to pay attention, and if he behaves and does what I ask, it never even touches him, just guides him as a pressure threat. Like "I'm going to put this here near your hip so that you know that you need to move your hip away from it." and if he doesn't move, it gets closer till it bumps him. And it KEEPS bumping until he gets annoyed enough to move. <.>
It breaks my heart to see horses abused.

Salila is right about some horses needing an extra nudge from spurs, but it is relatively rare. I've never even owned a pair, and the set I got for my daughter is used as a wall decoration. It is NEVER EVER (yes, I am shouting here) appropriate to use them as a weapon to gouge a horse's sides into hamburger. Good on you for having the courage to take the pictures and display them, Lydia. Personally, I hope there is a place in hell for people who mistreat animals like this.

Look at the following dressage from England. It is one of the most beautiful, amazing dances of horse and rider I have ever seen. The horse is obviously having a marvelous time- look at the swishing tail on that showoff girl. The film is jerkier than the original film I saw, but is the best I can find.

And look at this one: not only no spurs, but no bridle and no saddle. Nothing but love, pats, great training, and perfect accord between horse and rider. The action really starts about 3:30. In Wyoming and Texas, people throw babies in the air over a performance like this. (Be calm- the baby throwing is only an idiomatic phrase. ;))

Okay, I am seriously getting wound up here, but Lydia's pictures just make me want to BITE someone.

Hi Shanazal, yes i hope there is a ,,special,,place for people that abuse animals i do realy realy hope so,because to many people are getting away with it....terrible!making money using animals is a old trade, we eat them use them for work, display clothes, you name it but if they would just treat them right it would make such differance...
And Karis yes i am sure there are some stables that are ok around that area,my big concern is aswell the horses that pull the little wagons (i dont know how you call them) People sit in them and then go for a ride...now down the giza piramids you can do this aswell...but the road to go up to the giza plateau is a bit steep, and the horses are wipped badly to pull harder and faster to make it to the top...if you look at the legs from the horses they have so many marks from wipping its realy bad...i was there ones walking up to the plateau and a horse went letterly treu his knees pulling a wagon the horse was sitting on his front knees and the driver still kept on wipping him...i went back to the hotel my day was finished and i felt i would never go back to Egypt it was hunting me for a long time....i wish there was a law that forbid this things ,....perhaps i must do something about it...like a pettion and talk to the minister of tourism something like that...

Anybody who knowingly puts gaping, bloody wounds on an animal is being deliberately cruel. I don't believe they are ignorant that they are causing pain. They just don't care.
