What is the greater danger?

The growth of fusion or
The continuing numbers of 6-week wonders who tout themselves along the sleazy path?
Simplifying my crystal ball....;)

Can you describe what you mean by the sleazy path? Do you mean lots of pelvic thrusting, hair throwing, and chest heaving, or something else? (I'm pretty new to BD and just getting acquainted with current events and issues.)

Teaching at a shop that also sells dildos, pretending to have an orgasm on stage, dancing in such a fashion that STRIPPERS get uncomfortable ... basically expressing all your sexual problems/frustrations on stage.

To the OP -- inexperienced teachers are the greater danger because they don't realize the damage they do until long after its done.

Ack, thank heavens I haven't seen that sort of thing.... Horrible.

Wearing such costumes that you can see way more than want to or wonder if something going to pop out at any minute...

Looking like a cat on heat, making 'porno' faces while dancing or posing for bellydance promo materials...

Oh and using bellydance to sell other 'services' as it is many times the case in Egypt.

Given those definitions, I'd have to say the sleazy path, though I don't think it matters whether La Sleaze has six weeks of experience or six years.

I think that dancers going for the 'glory' or 'sleazy' path are a huge threat. So is the inexperienced teacher, or teacher with poor technique who advertise what they are doing as the real-deal and professional. But that goes for fusion too... sleaze is bad no matter where it is...

Please Aziyade, PLEASE tell me this was something you dreamed up in the throes of a fiendish belly dance nightmare from which you awoke screaming loudly for it to stop, and this it is NOT based on something you've witnessed in reality, please please....:shok:! On second thought, don't answer :(

The 6 week wonder is my current pet hate, sleazy or not. In London it seems to be the current trend to do level 1 (6 weeks), level 2 (6 more weeks), level 3 (another 6 weeks), then teacher training (6 weeks) and voila: ready to set up a 'school' (people are no longer satisfied with setting themselves up as teachers, they have to have a 'school). Now while I admire the commitment - 4 x 6 weeks takes ALMOST a whole 6 months!! - it is NOT ENOUGH!!

That's like asking a person if they prefer whipped cream or lard?

In answer to both questions, both will prevail. Fusion is here to stay, as it is part of the creative process, and kicking against it is futile. And lardy ol' sleazebags and fleshpots will stay around too, coz that's the nature of us humans and so long as humans can shake a tail feather, you're gonna have some silly ninnies who think it's ok to express their inate and baser desires in public like flapping dirty old drawers. We would all prefer not to be exposed to someones worn and inexpert gusset, but hey, some of us wash our undies every day and some don't. I guess we just turn and walk away from the ...er... unwholesomeness of it all.

!

Sorry -- I have to :)

Idiot ex-student of mine is teaching at the dildo shop.
Orgasm on stage? -- no, I heard about that on Bhuz. (sigh of relief)
Obscene dancing? Yep, seen that -- but it gets excused because it wasn't a "bellydance" venue. Whatever.

I don't really see fusion as that large a threat. Change is normal and as long as there are those that continue the original styles the "classic" will remain long after the fads have gone away.

Now unproffessionaism/sleeze is a threat to any proffession if it becomes pervasive enough that it becomes synonimous with it so I am going to have to go with that.

yeah, you're right -- sleaze crosses all style lines, so it's a danger to everybody who hopes to ever be taken seriously. I recast my vote for sleaze.

I think the "nice" teachers that teach "nice" bellydance but completely disconnected from the culture is a greater danger. A little sleaze here and there is, not cool, but also maybe not the end of the world, and hey, fusion can be wonderful. A really sleazy dancer would probably out-embarass herself and not be invited back unless the venue itself was questionnable, and we all have different levels of what we think is sleaze.

Fusion etc no danger, it will go it's own way and will be considered a dance (seperate from BD) That push is getting stronger all the time. Sleaze, can have a bad effect because the GP takes that on board, plus prospective students can be put off. 6 week wonder teachers, can also be a problem as they don't always know how to prevent students from injuring themselves and obviously just don't know enough. I believe some teachers who have had little training have through the years ended up being great teachers, but I would think most of them have continued training, attending WS's etc

I think 6 week wonders (together and seperately ) will probably always be around sadly, the rest of us just have to make sure we let the GP know what is right and wrong when we have the opportunity.

:shok: That is BAD.

IMO the 6 week wonders, whether on the sleazy path or the plain craptacular dancing path - presumably the sleaze is just an attempt to cover for the craptacularity.

Fusion might be a bit confusing for the general public, but I'd rather someone thought that a piece of good fusion or tribal was real belly dance than some 6 week wonder's nonsense in bedlah.

I am beginning to agree with a lot here.
The fusion will push further and many will drop the belly dance tag but the squeevy gal in a bazaar special that doesn't fit hawking herself about as a pro and dancing for a plate of pasta will always resemble what the GP thinks of as a BDer.
That nice teacher mmm she needs thinking about especailly next time the class flit off to the opening of an envelope .
Now what about the fitness link..how dangerous is belly aerobic.the dance without the social or cultural link?

In some ways that may be the bigger threat as it is completely changing the whole point of the dance and I worry giving false impressions- belly dance does not provide that flat tummy toned look from my experience. The fitness aspect becomes the focus and who is in control of the information - we have some great people here who give great advice on muscles, problems excetra but what experience and qualifications are these instructors going to have. I've seen many styles of belly rolls and some seem a little dubious in terms of being good for you.
I just get these nightmare visions of it getting a little out of control and people trying to do Rachel Brice backbends and Turkish drops in the name of fitness and without proper advice.
