Ugh - I HATE the way the music was just spliced together. That makes me crazy.

I would say it was a theme show -- Halloween, Vixens, Bad Girls, Hollywood -- and she was just doing a little "alternative" expression. Take her out of the Catwoman costume and put the fake gun away and it's just well-executed jazz "fusion" or alternative bellydance.

She's a good dancer. This was probably her chance to have a little fun.
We're SO OVER the whole dancer doing James Bond thing here in the US though that it looks awfully cheesy to me. The music around 1:00 minute seemed to work better. But that's just me.

I'm too new to explain the dance part....Aziyade got that...but I thought the theme was Batgirl....is that Catwoman? I can't believe I'm forgetting superheros...I used to love Superheros as a little girl. I still want some cuffs that ward off everything like Wonder woman :)

Belly dance issues aside a) what has Catwoman got to do with James Bond? and b) what was the point of splicing in that middle song, because it didn't sound like it fitted with Catwoman or Bond.

Novelty fusion happens, but I think it needs to have some sort of point to it to work. I can see Bond girl does belly dance, or Catwoman does belly dance, but to me this doesn't make any sense whatsoever and I just sit there wondering what they were thinking, did some one tell her Catwoman was a Bond character? would it make sense if I understood the lyrics to the middle song, etc etc....

(I saw the mask as a low peaked cap first, and had a complete WTF moment about the costume. It was a relief to see the cat ears).

Don't want to cause a thread divert but just found this from the same channel.
Since when are a few hipdrop-kicks and shimmies enough to make something any kind of belly dance fusion? (that's a rhetorical question I don't want the answer to, isn't it...)

Batgirl, catwoman -- I'm a fangirl and I'm ashamed to say I'm not sure what she was going for. You're right LadyLoba -- it's probably batgirl, due to the lack of a tail. I think if she'd have just gone with "Bond vixen" it would have been easier to understand, but whatever...

Aniseteph, the clip you posted shows EXACTLY how fusion can go wrong. Obviously the choreographer was oblivious to the meaning and lyrics of the song and to an English-speaking audience, the dance looks ridiculous because it doesn't follow at all the meaning or tone of the lyrics.

(Now I know how Caroline feels when she sees WTFusion pieces to Om Kalsoum songs.)

I don't know what's up the Russian interpretation of bellydance. Some of them really get it and can dance a beautiful Egyptian style, and some of them just sort of prance around and shimmy. Maybe their definition of bellydance is "a few hipdrop-kicks and shimmies." I know some American dancers who would be satisfied with that description :(

The strangest interpretation of "Ice Queen" I've ever seen:

I can't help but think of Clan of the Cave Bear.

I want those feather boots.

Maybe we need to rethink the whole "Arctic/Laplander Land before time" angle on costuming. The thought of wearing raccoon tails on my butt is sort of growing on me.

But again, "Bellydance" ??????? Who's teaching these women???

Okay, I'm done for now. LOL. Thanks for the original link! There are some really unusual and enjoyable performances in that list -- if you just think of them as dance and not bellydance.

Carmen would so NOT have worn black yoga pants under her skirt. Good performance though.

You have to admit they are interesting to watch, but there's an awful lot of "what is this doing in a belly dance competition?"

There is a reason why belly dance costumes look the way they do- they accentuate the moves of the dance. This costume does not do that. I don't like it at all.

I must agree the last one (Yoga-pants Carmen) was quite lovely, but I also agree with Belly Love, the costume did nothing for her movements (except the swishy skirt, but then again not for the bellydance part).
Out of most of the vids posted here I really do not see what makes them anything close to 'bellydance'. The first few made me think of the Village People...

"Its fun to stay at the.. WHY!! MCA..."

Very very odd clips... material for the TPBDC (you can either interpret that is thought provoking belly dance costumes or thought provoking belly dance clips)

Why oh why does everything in those countries have to be a contest? Can't they just have shows?
