Geez, she reminded me of one of those girls who would dance in cages in rock-n' roll clubs in the 1960s and '70s.
Bad style points -- so-so posture, bent knees when she walked, claw-like hands, poor transitions so "flow" was really lacking, shimmies that were more like shaking.
And I kept expecting to see butt crack with that skirt and that shaking.
But I'm sure she's a nice girl and kind to her mum.
If you discount grace, style, subtlety, posture, and training, she is superb. I personally adore Ishtar. Every time I start thinking about retirement due to limitations brought about by an aging body, I watch an Ishtar video and think, "This is what is passing for professional belly dance these days?" Then I sign up for another year of teaching. There's a dance in the old dame yet, toujours gai, toujours gai.
I think she is late 30s/early 40s and she is the dancer who could have become one of the best. This makes me really sad. I have seen her dance and I was told to expect great things and GULP, saw an unprofessional display of Look how flexible I am. Yet there are sparks of ability there and yup confidence by the bucketload, something we could all do with! I beleive she is never to be seen at any festivals studying and attended very few classes her self. What a shame. How good could she be as she has some natural flare. she is not alone in this area ,as I am sure in others, with dancers who feel they need no teaching that they are somehow "naturally" good. We have at least 2 teachers here in my part of the North West who embraked on teaching with no background and classes and training whatsoever. beleive me, she is a better dancer than both of those and she also has a very charismatic personality, making some of her students feel good abaout themselves.
Standards of teaching and bellydance in the UK generally scare the hell out of me. We have some superb dancers in our Northern region alon who spend so much time and money studying with master teachers and living sleeping breathing belly dance then we have the "I'm a natural" who kid their students they are doing it right or "does it really matter we are having fun". I need to continue this in another place:think:
I still found this her least annoying performance though . Ok, she first of all needs a different facial expression and a bra that fits better, but I felt even kind of bad for her when her shoes spoiled her floorwork
There are definitely other teachers who seem to have a 'personality cult' following with hundreds of devoted students, although they're cr*ap! I really can't explain it, it seems to be a mutual ego boost.
Ok, I'm starting to feel sorry for her. I'm sure she's not a bad person, just blind and overconfident as to her own abilities as we all are at one time or another.
But she definitely serves as a warning: It doesn't matter how good you feel about your own dancing, before you think you're competent to be a pro have someone film you, really look at the results and ask yourself and real professionals if you're ready for prime time.
