I can't imagine that dance style....

but wasn't Solame the daughter of Herod? Eewww! I can't even begin to imagine to strip off veils and tease my legs toward my dad!

I did love the first veil she came out with, but couldn't help but notice they tried really, really hard to get the costume to match her skin tone at the end...

I guess for once, I can say, THANK GOD FOR CENSORS!

Horrible, frantic, bad dancing. :wall:

At least we now know the people from the Middle East were originally blonde .

The sound of that scream made it even worse.

It's from a 1953 movie "Salome" starring Rita Hayworth.

If you are looking for historical accuracy in big studio 1950's technicolor movies you are looking in the wrong place. It's about making Rita Hayworth look good (for 50's tastes), getting a lot of coloured stuff in (ooh, veils!), big stars, story that sounds really exciting but actually won't shock the censors too much (according to one website she's only his long lost stepdaughter here - no nasty incestuous connotations, also looks like the wife her asks for JtB's head, not nice Rita), and generally making good box office. They would only have been interested in having Ms Hayworth attempting any "authentic" bellydance if they could have done a publicity tie-in about her learning with an expert (who would have had to come of worse in the publicity photos ).

Just another "careless" YouTube tag. Dance style:  Hollywood eclectic?

I know it wasn't that authentic, the other woman was wearing a lot of obviously modern make-up too. But with that dancer they weren't even trying .

I actually just found it out of the blue. I dont remember what I typed in. I think it belly dance technique or something. I was looking for videos on how to do undulations. lol I guess I didn't notice the poor makeup and the era the movie came from. I just know I was grateful when she finished dancing that she still had something on. lol

Has there ever been a more beautiful woman in Hollywood than Rita Hayworth? No wonder prince Ali Khan fell in love with her. I liked her better in Gilda though. Rita Hayworth was a highly trained dancer....though not a bellydancer.
As for Salome, she was Herod's stepdaughter as well as his neice since she was the child of his brother Philip, who had been married to Herod's wife Herodias before him. (thus, John the Baptist's criticism which ultimately cost him his head) The bible doesn't mention Salome's age, or even her name. According to an article about dancing in the bible on Gilded Serpent, she is referred to by the word Korasion which implied that she was a small child:

"First, Salome is referred to as a korasion, meaning, a little girl not yet old enough to be married. Basically this means she had no breasts and had not menstruated yet. Second, the word used for dance here is orxeomai, which not only means dance, but the playful goofing off of young children."

So, all the references to a lecherous Herod Antipas lusting after his stepdaughter are probably not accurate and apparently there was no sexual interest involved at all. Here's the full article:

Now we're talking! I did not know any of the history and I think it is wonderful to learn all that. I find that it is so hard to believe how young girl's were married off. It really has not been that long either. Victorian era perhaps?

I could tell it was an old movie but didn't recognize Rita Hayward, but as I was watching the dance I felt it was reminiscent of Martha Graham's style. I could tell the dancer was trained in Modern Dance.

For an even more horrible example of Hollywood see the movie Ghengis Khan with John Wayne and Susan Hayward.

We have Oscar Wilde to thank for the Seven Veils.

Oh, Ghengis Kahn, wherein John Wayne mutters, "I feel this Tartar woman is for me and my blood says, 'Take her!'"

They just don't make movies like that any more... I hope.

Yup - peeling off a glove in Put The Blame on Mame was awesome, she is just stunning in that. Who needs seven veils?

I get that, only with chocolate biscuits...
