Hello all,

I have this dilemna and I was wondering what everyone was feeling about it.

My son is 19 and most who know me, know I talk about cycling quite a bit because my son races. I like attending his races and cheering him and others on during the race.

Here is my dilemna....For the most part, I try to stay out of his racing because he is an adult and makes his decisions by himself. I will only say something if he asks me what I think.

This past Saturday, my son placed 3rd in a road race and he won $40.00. I stayed in the car while he socialized and received his prize money. While I was waiting, I saw another rider who had a envelope with prize money. I thought to myself, he did not place well enough to receive prize money. Well, my son came back to the car and told me they lost his prize money. At that point, I didn't put it together, I just encouraged my son to go back and talk to the race director and to get his prize money before we left. My son came back with a check written out to him for the amount he won.

It was when I got home and was able to get onto the computer when I was looking at the race results when I noticed that sure enough. The cyclist who had the envelope, had indeed not placed well enough to have received prize money in an envelope. I feel certain given his past history that he was the one who stole my son's prize money.

Here is the dilemna...Should I post on the Minnesota cycling website something like this:

Prize money was stolen from a rider in the ***** race. A rider who did not place within limits to receive a prize was seen with a prize envelope. My suggestions are for race promoters to lock up the money in a safe place until they are ready to hand it out, then to make sure the money does not leave their hands. Also, instead of giving cash, write a check to that rider so it is trackable.

My son did say I should say something, but I do not want to over step my boundaries on parenthood. On the message board I would post on, it is a requirement to put your first initial and last name when posting. I could make up a name, but then the credibility would be lost.

What does everyone think I should do?

I think you should. You're not naming names, you are pointing out an issue with a good solution. How will the problem be dealt with if no one speaks up?

Personally I would contact the people running the race to tell them rather than posting on a public forum. Even if the evidence and previous knowledge suggest otherwise, I would worry that the accusation could be false. I'm just not big on putting stuff out in the public that one might regret in the future. Once it's on the internet, it's there pretty much for good.

I agree with Karena - I think you should just tell the organisers what you saw. They are the ones who might have an issue with this guy, they were out of pocket because presumably they didn't keep the original money safe (or gave it out to the wrong person ). Up to them to tighten their procedures if they want, alert other organisers etc etc.

I would contact the race organisers.it was their responsibilty to make sure the prize was was kept safe and then handed to the right person. The guy who took it has robbed them and they should know about it.

me too.. you do not want to make wrong accusations.... but on the other hand.. those in charge should know the circumstances/suspect. (& why are they handing out cash & not checks anyhow??)

I absolutely agree with Karena, contact the organisers and tell them what you saw, and let them take the investigation from there. While you are speaking with them, suggest that they always write a cheque to the prize winners, and not have the temptation and untraceable cash lying around. Seems pretty stupid of them to have that much money cash in an unsecure place and envelope that is for sure.

Slinks!!!! Welcome back and I hope you pop in more often. What have you been up to?

Thankyou everyone for great advice. I am not being an over-bearing mother by saying something then? I will notify the race director directly and tell him what I saw.

You are doing them a favour by letting them know their envelope security leaves a bit to be desired. Being a mum and where your son came in the race doesn't come into it.

But if he stole the envelope why did he walk around with it for everyone to see?

Also if your son got the money and then lost it, maybe the other guy found it? How come they gave him a check after he lost the envelope? Im really confused now.

Thankyou Pia! It is hard being a parent of a grown up.

I am sure it is-whenever my brother and I screw up (frequently) I can see my mother wanting to charge in and rescue/kill us.she's pretty good at butting out though
