Egyptian/American Fusion

Dance etc.

Hey Jane,

it's quite all right as Egyptians we don't see it as fusion by Westerner understanding, because it's simply not. On the other hand, there is a license for creativity when it comes to any art form. But you have to know the vocabulary first and I might add You have know it well first before you can come up with your own sentence. Baby don't write books first ..

Unfortunately, it seems to me that as soon as somebody knows couple of movement from belly dance, claime that license ...

Dear Mahmoud,
I second that thought!! too many people take five lessons and think they know it all. good dancers tend to make it look a lot easier than it is and that is misleading if the observer does not know enough about the dance to know it is pretty complex.
Regards,
A'isha

This has me wondering; what do Egyptians, and other people native to the Middle East, think of the dances from other areas of the world? Offensive? Better? Ugly? Just different?

Do they think we're crazy for trying to imitate their dance? Flattered? Insulted? Don't care? Doomed to failure?

Maybe that deserves it's own thread.

Update: hey, I just found one already going on!

P.S. A Native American lady, who just started my class two months ago, was improving with a veil to Egyptian music tonight. It kind of came out like a mix between N.A. women's Fancy Dancing with the shawl and Egyptian veil. Interesting. Not Belly Dance, but interesting. :) Here's a video of what "fancy dancing" looks like.

Just to clarify, 'fusion' is not a dance style, but a bit of this and that.

The term is often used loosely to describe something that is not of one 'pure' style.
In relation to the video of Nagwa, I took the whole fusion discussion as very 'tongue in cheek' meaning not serious and just a play on words because she was doing the twist and then stopped to do a spot of baladi. It was more of a joke than anything.

You were right about your other observations too.

When I posted it as "Egyptian/American Fusion", I was being toungue in cheek too because the fusion controversy thing is such a hot topic. I thought it would lighten the mood.

As for Madam.... well just because I think she's the second coming of Satan, (I'm sure there must be a hadith somewhere to back this up), doesn't mean I have a problem with anyone else liking her. My friends love that black drink they sell on the street in Egypt, I hate it like vampires hate crosses!, (wonder what happens if the vampire is muslim or jewish though?). Doesn't mean I don't love my friends because I think their taste in food is horrible. So feel free to love you some A'isha all you want, no biggie.

Are you talking about A'isha Azar? (you don't need to give explanations or any details about the issue)

Dear Leila,
Yes, he is talking about me. This is just one of several very hateful things Tarik has written about me. Others have told me about it, but this is my first chance to read this particular one

Oh for Christ's sake! Haven't we been all over this and agreed to leave it in the past? You know, I was simply going to reply: NO COMMENT and leave it at that. Why dig up old dirt and why take the bait and fall for it?

Insult

I take it then, that this is an OLD insult?? In which case, I am willing to leave it in the past. How am I supposed to know when it pops up brand new to me? If this happens again, can I just assume it was done in the past?I am only aware of a some of them, not all, and I do not know what is recent and what is dated.

PS: If I were you, I would talk to the moderator or to Salome and Anatoliy about maybe having those kinds of posts deleted, because it seems they may pop up now and then and I honestly have no idea if they are old or new. I have no reason to think that it might not happen again. Once bitten, twice shy. I do not intend to just ignore them if people ask if you are talking about me. "No comment" is not a satisfactory response to my mind.
Some people have great respect for you and will believe what you have said about me, regardless of the fact that it is false. Obviously if you set out to create such a bad reputation for me, it may have longer lasting consequences than either of us can say.

You know that it was a past comment as you've complained about it to the moderators. Look, we've been all over this. Everyone knows we had a blow out, plain and simple. We've agreed to move on. Even at my worse it was never my habit to insult you or anyone else without a reason, whether you understand or agree with it or not.

We have been able to get to a place where we can at least speak to one another. I haven't felt the need to answer your last reply to me because its obvious that on some issues we will never see eye to eye. I said what I had to say on the subject and that is that. Everyone knows where I am coming from and I have no need to convince you or anyone else otherwise. As you've noticed, I haven't been spending anywhere near the amount of time in here as I use to.

As for once bitten. I'm a rather simple creature to figure out. If you say or do anything to offend me, I will let you know quick as lightning. I don't beat around the bush and I don't mince words, and just because I may not get along with you doesn't mean I have a problem if others do. So far, we haven't had any negative interactions that would cause me to have reason to say anything to or about you. I've agreed to let the past be the past.

So, in the future, if someone brings something up the past. You might do as I intend to, either don't reply, or simply inform: "those comments were made in the past at a time when our relationship was at a low point. Since then, we have come to an understanding and have agreed to leave the past in the past, no further comment".

If you are no longer making such comments, then I am willing to let bygones be bygones. I have no way of being sure that you were not starting yet another "Spawn of Satan" run, or something, but in the future, I will try to give you the benefit of the doubt.
If you simply say, "No comment", that is not good enough. If you explain as you did in the last paragraph above, I can live with that.

Starting again

Dear Mahmoud,
Sorry, but I will respond whenever anyone asks about it, because I have the right to try to salvage my own reputation in the dance world. I will respond that the situation has been ironed out, or some such thing. What I will NOT do is bring it up of my own accord, just as I have not thus far, because I am going to stick my neck out and trust Tarik that this is history from now on.
Hugs to you,
A'isha

Even at my worst, I have always been nothing less than a man of my word.

Jane, I think it's a terrific clip and showcases Ms. F's comedic side, which I had never seen until now!

What is fusion? It's a blend of styles. It might be good fusion or bad fusion and even so-bad-it's-hilarious fusion (and let's remember this is supposed to be musical comedy), but this scene is a blend of styles.
