To Expose & Be Exposed

I have done it and so have you! In fact, this is one of my favourite activities: I see a clip of a performance that I love, or hate, or find interesting on youtube.com or somewhere else and I post my comments there or I post the link here and open the floor for discussion. But this brings many questions:
1. Does it matter where we found the performance clip - in a "public" forum such as youtube.com or on a "private" web site that a dancer build for herself?
2. Does it matter that it is viewed "out of context"? For example, Alexial wrote on TheHipCircle.com re: Sashi's Pierced Wings Performance "...things started getting even more out of hand when articles ‘critiquing’ the performance started showing up on a widely cabaret style webzine, which brought the performance to the attention of an audience it was never intended to reach."
3. What happens if you find an unauthorized video of yourself? Do you contact the person and ask to remove it? Do you just leave it alone?
I'd love to hear what you think!

I think, if you don't want everyone to be able to watch your video, don't post if on a website which is accessible to everyone.

I don't know how I would react if someone would post a video of me somewhere without me knowing it. I think I would ask the person to remove it and ask for my permission next time. If I like the video and it isn't posted at an "inapropriate" place, I would still contact the person to ask if he/she will ask for my permission next time, but I wouldn't mind the video being there.

I don't like people lifting my video clips and pictures. When someone asks my permission though I have always given it, so far, with the stipulation that my name and a link to OrientalDancer.net is published alongside the media. Which I think is reasonable. People have alerted me many times that so and so has posted my clips on youtube etc. I've read comments of total adoration to very negative remarks. I remember someone wrote a comment about my sword/goblet clip about how she could travel with her sword and I should try it sometime. I guess she didn't notice I was standing on wine glasses.

The truth of the matter is that I can't spend my time patroling the internet for people pirating my media. When I do find out about it I have confronted folks and ask that they credit me or remove it.

In any event part of putting your stuff out there is accepting that there will be negative and positive commentary about what you are doing. Someone will think you are amazing and god's gift, someone will think you are bad or boring or whatever... I have my opinions about other dancers too. I judge. Though I'd like to think I do so with tact and grace.

LOL!!! That is such a typical sort of comment though. A lot of people will look briefly, barely absorbe anything and then pass judgement based on misconceptions. I am probably no better since I will open a video from Utube, watch half a second and decide I don't like it and shut it down. However, unless I have something positive to say I refrain from commenting unless specifically invited by the person dancing or the owner of the artwork etc that I am looking at. IMO criticism has its place, but only when made constructively

I think that any time anything is put on the net you can pretty much expect it to be found and lifted by someone. Watermarking your images/videos is a good way help prevent someone else taking credit for your work. While I would most likely request any copies I found elsewhere either be removed or at least credited to their original source with a link I'd refrain from putting anything up that under no circumstances did I want to be taken.

Why do people do this? It is quite a lot of work to lift a clip from a site and post it on youtube, so why bother? Why not look at it from the original site?
I don't get it... Maybe it is just for sport:p
