What are your favourite Shaabi songs?

I was re-reading the Miscarriage of Shaabi Justice thread because I've been thinking about Shaabi a lot lately. I've been trying to explore Shaabi music but I'm still a little overwhelmed- I know to check out Hakim and Saad, but I could use a little more direction than that. What are your favourite Shaabi song? And what do you like about that song?

If you would like to go back to the roots/beginnings of shaabi, I recommend music by Ahmed Adaweyya. My favorite of his songs is "Bint el Sultan".

Another of his songs that is quite famous is "Salametha Umm Hassan".

Hakim and Saad are both considered shaabi, but both are also much more modern. Their music is designed more for disco-style dancing, whereas the musical structure of Adaweyya's is a bit more traditional.

So one question for you to consider is whether you'd like to focus on the original style as popularized by Adaweyya or focus on the current top stars. Each could be a valid choice, it just depends on your tastes.

Personally, I've always found it helpful to start with current and then work back and explore older pieces. So I think I'm interested in more modern pieces for now, though the more it catches my interest, the more likely I am to check out more traditional songs. But in the meantime, I'll chck out the songs you've recommended, thanks Shira!

Thanks for your suggestions, everybody! I feel like this is what I was not getting in my shaabi music research.

Shaban Abd El Rehim

I just wanted to mention a caution.... Shaaban Abdel Rahim is certainly a shaabi style of singer. However, some of his songs are about topics that might not be such a good choice for a dance performance.

For example, "El Bengo" is a song telling people that they shouldn't get high on an Egyptian marijuana-like drug called "bengo". "Akhar Saah" is a song about an issue that occurred in Egypt some years back when a number of women murdered their husbands with knives. He's also had at least one hateful anti-Israel song.

I'm not saying you should stay away from his music, but if you want to use one of his songs I'd urge you to research it and find out exactly what it's about.

Thanks for that Shira. I am a dork and I love to research things, so I assure you I do intend to research any songs that are candidates for performance. For now I'm interested in cool shaabi songs to noodle around to while I'm drilling in front of the mirror and just generally listening to, to help me get a feel for whatever it is that shaabi is :)

Actually Shaabi music start way before than Ahmed Adaweyya. Yes, he made Shaabi popular, but he didn't start it. You can read more about Shaabi and Egyptian composer history in Bedwayah's web site. She has great knowledge of music. ;)

You might want to research songs by Saad too, as many of his songs have double meanings, and not the Rocky & Bullwinkle type either. The subtle meanings can be interpreted to be pretty suggestive and may offend a lot of ME people.

I've had a few nearfalls when it comes to people being offended by the lyrics whilst i'm blissfully unaware D=

Somebody mentioned Hoda and her album Shaabi Chic. Love the album, and I found a couple of very danceable songs there... Does anyone know how "safe" Hoda's songs are for dancing, lyrics-wise? Obviously I'd have to try to get a translation if I wanted to use one of her songs for performance, but just in case, it would be nice to know if I have to be super careful with her music. :D

I love this song but can't seem to find it anywhere except on YouTube. If you or anyone else knows where I could get hold of it that would be great
