I did the skirt from New Look 6584 recently and it turned out very nicely. There are lots of similar trumpet-type ones but some have lots of panels to get the flare and I didn't want so many vertical seams at the top, so I chose one with fewer panels but added extra godets.

I've got Kwik Sew 2632 for my next project - trying to make a DIY Sharifwear-style tie top. How hard can it be....?

I've used this pattern many times and it's really easy. Just make sure that you check the length of the top if you are tall, the first ones I made were a bit too short in the body (arms up and whoops your bra shows too much!). It's easy to length a couple of inches. And you can add to the ties so you can make a wrap-around, or add a drape to the sleeves. It's great if you have an overlocker (serger) but just as easy with a stretch stitch and zig zag stick. Good luck! :D

P.S. The pants are quite tight fitting, and haven't tried the leotard yet!

I use this pattern too, I used the pants for a modern Egyptian look and added in a lace insert. I think the leotard might be a bit short in the body so check measurements before cutting.

Always compare your measurments to the pattern!

And back on topic:
The first bd inspired piece I ever tried to make myself when I was a baby dancer was the pants (B1) from this pattern:

Except from me sewing it at least 4 sizes to big and in a heavy cotton fabric (certainly not a good thing as the pattern is made for chiffon or likewise fabrics and turned out way to big!), it went very well. I also made it later, but learning from the first mistake I both compared my measurements to the pattern and adjusted the width of the legs to the fabric I used. It was my favourite costume piece until I got my first real costume.
I have also made the wrap-around top (B2; it works ok, but will be a bit short if you have big boobs or a long torso), and a combination of front/back of the two tops (A1 has a closure in the back with buttons) but I'm not doing the latter again.

My favourite skirt pattern (both for costumes and party) is this from Neue Mode:

I've made it both plain (A), with a train (B) and altered in many ways, such as adding godets in all the seam (A), with a double back in contrasting colors and lacing (A+B) and as a wrap-around skirt for a friend (B).

Somebody has got experience with them?

Yes, fantastic. The woman who owns it (Jill?) is very helpful and very experienced. I missed out on the workshop but she took our class for a day and they had all made, covered and embellished belly dance bra tops that were a perfect fit by the end of the day. They have everything you need to make a bra from scratch and specialise in large busts (the owner and her daughter started the company after being unhappy with what was for sale in larger sizes).

I confess I've never actually used a pattern to make a costume except for tracing the crotch section of a pants pattern for harem pants, and most of the time I didn't bother to do that. I've bought plenty of patterns (I'd hate to tell you how much room my pattern collection takes up); I just don't use them. HOWEVER! The Folkwear Turkish costume is on my list of things to make some day and I can't see buying a beladi dress when they're so simple to make.

If you look at the back cover of the newest issue of Threads magazine, there is a beautiful fabric and applique treatment that would adapt well to a costume.
