That kind of weirdo goddessy stuff that Blanca does..sometimes i get that vibe from Sarah Skinner too...i guess for what it is it looks beautiful on them...but it's downright ridiculous on me!! i still can't get through Blanca's Sensual Bellydance dvd and even my mother thinks that Sarah is a fruit cake - thank goodness her dvd content is good or i'd have never gotten through that either.

Also though i am exceptionally drawn to tribal costuming (not the ridiculously colourful ones!) i'm a cabaret girl to the bone...i tried some tribal work with another dancer once...it was terrible...my body caberised all of the movement - plus...i like to respond to music how i feel it - what kind of dance requires everyone to respond the same way? I am not down with synchronicity.

Oh and i love Saidi....but i look like a darned fool skipping. I was not made to skip...or jump..i'm not aerodynamic like that.

HILARIOUS!
I love saidi too (it is my favourite rhythm *waves to other darbuka players*)... don't know if I look like a fool jumping around  I guess I just don't care - saidi is too much fun to think about that

you and me both girl! i like watching tribal but it's just not my style...i enjoy the beads and sequins and happy-go-lucky attitude along with coy.

to be honest i'm not sure what style i am SPECIFICALLY. i categorize it under American Cabaret but i suppose it's influenced especially by turkish. sometimes lebanese. i actually enjoy doing floorwork, which in my opinion is becoming a lost art. when someone does it tastefully it can be very pretty.

obviously goth "belly dance" never clicked with me, mostly because it was too scary and ridiculous, i don't even like to watch it. i don't do tribal fusion either, guess i'm too bouncy?

I also like to fuse Tahitian/Hula with belly dance, but I have a different name for it and I don't do it too often.

**kinda want that Earth Dance girl to post something on here... lol

I don't like tribal fusion. I tried to find an ATS troupe after my first year because I was attracted by the idea of learning more about transitions and getting over my pathological fear of choreos by practising dancing without one.

I never found a troupe and that may be for the best as I've always been too bolshie to find co-operation easy.

AND I was thrown out of ballet class aged 6 because I wouldn't do drills!!

lol@thrown out of ballet class. I used to cry when i missed mine.

some girl was trying to argue that she and a bunch of other ladies danced bare chested in spirituality of fertility and goddessness and that they belly danced without tops on for each other and blended it with earth dance. to read the whole story, it's on the thread "How to convince someone what belly dance really is" or something like that.

Well one day earth girl will be old...and menopausal..and wonder how she will describe her dance when her chest moves with both shoulder shimmies and belly rolls... yup gravity sometimes isn't a wonderful thing. what styles don't suit me... along with this aged line of thought... floorwork - used to like it... but my knees tell me if they're dropping to the floor they're staying there and don't even think about a graceful rise up. - Creaks

Just went to see what all the Earth dance thing was about. :shok:

With you on the floorwork Creaks - for me there'd be too much wincing and crunching noises and cursing under the breath - not very elegant!

aw man, i can always count on you all to help me unwind after class!! such sillinesss...

i used to be pretty good at floorwork, used to be able to do those crazy big undulations and awesome backbends but since my back surgery i'm not as flexible :( i have to take things slow to get back to the way i was.

thought of another style that doesn't suit me: the kind that youngn's (younger than me!) do in their bedrooms in their bra and shortie shorts to songs and inspiration by shakira then proceed to post it on youtube as "sexy hot shakira belly dance"...it's way to spiritual and deep for me :lol::lol::lol::lol:

Bhangra/belly fusion - cute on others, not right for my body
Veil dances with wrapping or unwrapping...I'm just not a fan of the dressing/undressing/veiling/unveiling overtones, although I have seen other ladies do it well, it is typically not my favorite to watch, either.
Floorwork (forgive me Cory Zamora)...not right for my body, although I love to watch others do it. Maybe when I am stronger/lighter!
Tribal Fusion...I'm not "hard" or fast enough to perform this, I'm more of a "soft" movement dancer, and I'm still working on the ITS base. The closest I get is club dancing, but that is just for fun.. I want to try some Fat Chance or "near-ATS" formats besides our local one, and then work more on tribal fusion-type stuff for performance.
Props: I will never do hand candles or mouth/fire work. My body isn't right for hand candles, and I am afraid to damage my tongue/teeth with fire work.

Re expulsion from ballet class:

well of course then I missed it and wanted to go back - but by then my mum was expecting again and said she couldn't afford it! AAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Okay, if that their thing, whatever, I wont hate on it. But they better return the favor when I fall off my stump, laughing, at a well-timed mosquito. (Or poorly-timed mosquito, depending on your point of view.)

Any style of dance that involves mostly pops, locks, and incredibly crisp manipulations of stomach muscles aren't going to work on soft, flowy me (Getting softer and flowier with age, too, sort of like a marshmellow held over the fire too long. :D)

I don't go for the pops and locks either. My most recent instructor was a pops 'n locks gal, and she also incorporates alot of jazz and ballet movments and even some hip hop stuff, which feels so foreign on my body that I felt like I was learning a whole new dance... one that I just could not and cannot do well. It looks great on her, but it doesn't feel or look like bellydance on my body. If that makes any sense.

Regards
Priscilla
